Description

In 2004 Sam Castelli purchased land and a partially finished winery building on what is now the Castelli Estate, with the intention of using it as a family holiday home.  After finishing the winery building, Sam decided to continue what the previous owners had started and turned it into an operating winery after all. So began a bright and star-studded journey.

Sam Castelli didn’t stop the construction at a winery. The estate now boasts a cellar door which is open Wednesday to Monday, 11am to 4 pm, and an authentic Italian restaurant which is open Wednesday to Monday 12 pm to 3:30 pm for lunch and  Fridays and Saturdays 6pm to 9:30pm for dinner.  And also the newly renovated accomodation just next to the restaurant, with five Deluxe king size en-suites and expansive views over Mt Lindsay, the vineyards, and the green rolling hills and Karri trees so typical of the Denmark countryside.

The Wines
The wines are made by local winemaker Mike Garland and are consistently awarded high scores from national wine press, and enjoy medals and trophies at wine shows around Australia.

Five ranges of wine are sourced exclusively from the Home Block vineyard in Denmark, and vineyards in Mt Barker, Pemberton, The Porongurups and Frankland River.

Wines available to try and purchase include riesling, sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, pinot noir, shiraz, cabernet, grenache, a sparkling and a dessert wine.  The winery also makes a selection of alternate varietal wines, including an orange chardonnay and an iced viognier.

Description

Forest Hill has an interesting pioneer history and was once owned by the Holmes a Court family of Vasse Felix in Margaret River. In 1996 the vineyards were bought by the Lyons family, the current owners and old farming family from the Great Southern. The winery and cellar door were established in 2004 and the fine-dining restaurant, Pepper and Salt, is a popular wedding destination and from its elevated position has commanding views of the valley and estate vineyards.

The Wines:

The vineyard at Forest Hill winery was the site of the first grape plantings in the Great Southern in 1965, making it one of the oldest operating wineries in Western Australia.  The first vintage, a cabernet and a riesling, was released in 1972.  The cabernet was made by Jack Mann at Houghton Winery in the Swan Valley and the riesling by his son Dorham, at Sandalford.

Today the wines are made by Guy Lyons and Liam Carmody.  There are 14 wines made at Forest Hill which include riesling, sauvignon blanc, gewurtztraminer, chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon, shiraz and Malbec.

The Block Series wines are sourced from old dry-grown vineyards, and the riesling is often the recipient of medals and trophies at wineshows around the country.

Wine Tasting:

Positioned beneath the Pepper and Salt restaurant, and built into a stone cellar, the cellar door is open Thursday through Sunday 10.30am - 5pm.

35 acres of vineyards include many parcels nestled in areas of bushland surrounded by native plants and natural land formations which make the Frankland River viticultural region so beautiful. The soils are gravelly ironstone and contribute minerality to the wines.

The wines focus on site expression and terroir and the winery is best known for its award winning rieslings.  The Smith’s have been hosting an important annual riesling masterclass for more than a decade, which now travels interstate and features some of the greatest rieslings and riesling producers globally.  The family all travel widely and have worked in vineyards in Europe.  The winery and cellar door operate sustainably and since 2009 has been certified organic.

Description

The winery was started by brothers Murray and Iain Montgomery - both have always had a passion for good wine, which led them with their wives to develop the Kalgan property and the rammed-earth cellar door facility.

In a new chapter, new owners Phil and Michelle have big plans for Montgomerys! They are in the process of redeveloping the cellar door to be a tavern - which will have one of the best outlooks in the Great Southern! Along with food sourced locally it will also feature local wines and beers and offer something for every palate.

RAYMOND WILLIAMS;  VITICULTURIST

Ray commenced his career at Goundreys in Mount Barker where he became responsible for the entire estate vineyards. Subsequently, with significant knowledge of the climate and soils of the Great Southern, he established his own viticultural consultancy and now manages a number of independent vineyards including Montgomery’s Hill which he helped plan and establish.

QUALITY CONTROL

Ray Williams runs a very strict operation as far as the total wellbeing of the vineyard is concerned. The Cellar door and storage area was built away from the vineyard on Ray Williams’ advice to keep the public away from the vines for prevention of disease reasons. Montgomery’s Hill vineyard is quite idyllically situated with the closest vineyard being 10km from it. Consultants are employed during the winemaking process to ensure a quality product is produced from the excellent fruit grown at Montgomery’s Hill.

ALBANY GREAT SOUTHERN, WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Early explorer, T.B Wilson MD Surgeon RN came up the Kalgan River in a longboat during an 1834-35 expedition exploring the hinterland around the settlement of Albany . He wrote in his journal about the area which now comprises Montgomery’s Hill vineyard “this would be the place to grow the vine”.

The vines were planted in 1996 and have produced some excellent wines that have won numerous medals, including the 2007 Wine Wise Chardonnay trophy for the best wine under 300 tonne production in Australia.

The cellar sales outlet is open daily from 11am to 5pm (Winter months June to August 12noon to 4pm). Cheese platters are available and can be enjoyed with a glass whilst sitting on the verandah enjoying the view.

Subsequent vineyards were planted, and fruit now comes from five estate-owned properties around the Mount Barker area.

Western Australia’s oldest family business Lionel Samson & Son acquired Plantagenet in 1999 and the estate continues to grow from strength to strength, with an international reputation for its Rieslings, Chardonnays, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The mudbrick and timber cellar door, surrounded by stunning garden and historic vines make a beautiful setting in which to explore the Plantagenet wine range. Wines can be tasted daily between 10.30am – 4pm.

The Food

Alongside the cellar door is ‘The Shed’, Plantagenet’s café, serving lunch daily. The menu is a unique blend of contemporary and casual, with hearty dishes that pair with the wines. Dining can be enjoyed from the alfresco deck, or beside the fireplace in winter.

Fruit for the balance of their wines is sourced from specialist vineyard sites throughout the Great Southern Region and its distinct areas including Mount Barker, Albany, Frankland River.
