Blackwood Marathon

If running, canoeing, swimming, equestrian or cycling is your activity of choice, you may wish to enter a notable relay marathon of the Southwest region set throughout some truly beautiful terrain.

  • Dates:Oct 26
  • Time(s):Starts 9.00am
  • Venue:Boyup Brook Oval

Details

  • Venue Address:Beatty Street, Boyup Brook
  • Type:Health,Sports
  • Sports:Cycling,Running,Swimming,Other Sports & Fitness

Description

The competitors enter this event in teams comprising of 5 members, or ironmen and ironwomen. A runner, a canoeist, a swimmer, an equestrian and a cyclist. The race begins in the town of Boyup Brook and finishes in Bridgetown after journeying around 60kms through some of Western Australia’s most picturesque countryside in the Blackwood River Valley.

The relay begins with the running leg. A 12km course, along bitumen and gravel roads that take the competitors from Boyup Brook to the Blackwood River. At the end of the running leg, the team number, which is on a bib worn by the competitor, is handed to the canoeist who begins their journey of 8.5km. The course is mostly open water, with some narrow sections of running water over rocks or downed trees. The canoe leg finishes at Jayes Bridge. The race is then suspended while all the competitors and their supporters come together for a picnic lunch and a swapping of stories. At the end of the lunch break the swimmers begin their leg in the order that the canoeists arrived at Jayes Bridge. The swimmers have a distance of approximately 1km before running up the riverbank, where they are handed their team number. This is then passed to the equestrian who begins their leg of the race.

The 16km horse course takes part on gravel roads, through lush green paddocks and along the side of the Blackwood River. The course is quite undulating with several challenging hills that does require a fit, well trained horse if the team does not wish to be vetted out. Teams are vetted out if, 30 minutes after finishing their leg, the horse’s heartbeat does not return to below 60 beats/min. Horse riders pass their team numbers onto the last team member - the cyclist. Then the final leg 22km course with some challenging hills takes the race into the town of Bridgetown. The course is along bitumen except for the first 50m and the final 200m which is a gravel track that takes competitors onto the trotting track for a lap to the finish line.

The race concludes at the Bridgetown Sports Ground where everyone meets for good old fashioned country hospitality and the presentations. There is a variety of food on offer, massages(!) and of course a bar to help you celebrate a successful day. This time is often the highlight of many people’s day. While waiting for all teams to finish and the timing to be completed, everyone has time to socialise and spin a few yarns about how they went.

The highs the lows, the absolute joys and the crushing frustrations, no topic is off limits! From farting to fighting, cuddles to car trips and featuring an all star local cast, it’ll be a crazy ride!

Target Practice
Writer & Director: Jez Obern
Could you imagine if the films Training Day, Stake Out and Super Troopers made a baby with Australian TV shows Blue Heelers and No Activity and what that baby would look like? Clearly that baby would be a short play named Target Practice and it would be a little silly, a little heart-warming, very funny and identifiably Australian. Target Practice follows two officers of the law whilst on a stakeout in their local country town. The script coasts along on the banter between the two characters, as they explore fatherhood, practical jokes, film preferences and relationships. A short play packed full of laugh out loud moments and likeable characters.

Dad Diaries
Writer & Director: Gerard Robertson
Ever wanted an insight into the secret life of a Dad? Well now you can get it! Uncensored, uncut and unconventional. This crazy journey will make you laugh, cry and sometimes even cringe! Based on personal experiences and conversations with many fathers, this new play by a new father is sure to resonate with families. It’s not always going to be pretty but all topics are tackled in a light-hearted, tongue in cheek way!

Brigadier Arnold Potts Oration is an annual event organised by the 16th Battalions’ Foundation.

The 16th Battalions’ Foundation was formed by the 2/16th Infantry Battalion AIF Association to promote greater awareness, understanding and recognition of the service and achievements of the 16 Battalions in service to their country and communities during the Great War and World War II.

In the process of awareness and recognition we endeavour to pass on the traditions of spirit and service to our country for young Australians. In part we seek to achieve this by the Foundation funding of an annual scholarship where – in conjunction with the Commanding Officer and his staff of 16 Battalion Battle Group RWAR (Army Reserve) – a selected Army Reserve soldier has a paid for study tour attached to a tour of battle grounds and events relative to an earlier configuration of 16 Battalion. From their experience, study and observations on the scholarship tour, that soldier is entrusted to prepare to address and share his experiences and findings to his peers with the present day Battalion and wider in formal and informal presentations to groups and organisations. The focus being particularly on younger Australians, in both military and general communities.

The Oration is named after Brigadier Arnold Potts as one the most outstanding soldiers and leaders of the Battalion to date. He also played a major part in the positive  growth and character of the Kojonup and Great Southern regions with his input to those communities during his lifetime.

On the occasion of the 2019 Oration, it was voted by the Foundation Committee to hold the Oration this year for the first time outside of Perth, in Arnold Pott’s “home town”.

We invite a guest speaker of note to address the audience each year on a theme connected to the Battalions bearing the number Sixteen and in the keeping of the Foundation’s aims. There have been outstanding speakers and, of course, we seek to maintain the high standard of presentations.

For 2019, the Foundation is delighted to advise that Doctor Peter Brune has agreed to our invitation and will address the Oration in Kojonup. Peter has a distinguished record in the study and writing of Australian military history, coupled with an outstanding research record. He has a profound knowledge of the Papuan Campaign of World War Two which includes the Kokoda Track and the connected battles on the Northern shores of Papua. Five of his present books have had a Papuan Campaign focus. His CV in detail is attached. Not only is Peter an authority on the Kokoda and surrounds events – he can entertain while he educates! “Advertising” Flyer attached also.

Arnold Potts meant much to many people – especially of the earlier generations of Australians. By holding the Oration in the Great Southern it is hoped to introduce younger Australians to the man and what he stood for, as well as add to the knowledge of all who attend, from the depth of studies, personal interviews and research of a noted and  practical historian, in Arnold Potts home town.

I, and the 16th Battalions’ Foundation, would be pleased to assist further in any way possible with further detail and information if required.

Description

With a whirlwind 10 years, we’ve seen Drapht go from releasing his number one - platinum selling - ARIA award winning album ‘The Life of Riley’; to taking some time out to reignite his passion for music by becoming a restauranteur in Perth; only to return five years later with yet another ARIA award receiving record ‘Seven Mirrors’.

Drapht’s latest offering ‘Summer They Say’ is yet another example of how the man will constantly push himself and his boundaries to progress as a song writer, while forever staying true to his classic upbeat signature sound, witty well thought-out lyrics and effortless fluid like flow that his legion of fans know him all too well for. With co-production from Melbourne’s own rising star Hamely and featuring a group effort from his All Star Perth band mates Indoor Fins & Morgan Bain on chorus duties, this tune is yet another example of why Drapht continues to be at the forefront of the ever-evolving genre.

“I’ve been so inspired by a bunch young-bloods in the scene over the last year, that it has really pushed me to up my game. But It feels great to be back with new material that I’m really excited about, a new home for my music and a bunch of parties around the country scheduled in to celebrate”
