About Mount Imlay National Park

Mount Imlay National Park is a things to do venue in Towamba, New South Wales.

The park is named after the Imlay brothers, early pioneers of the district, and is situated 387 km south of Sydney, accessed via the Princes Highway south of Eden. The local aboriginal community calls the mountain “Balawan,” which holds significant spiritual and cultural significance for them.

The breathtaking natural beauty of the park offers an escape from the city’s hustle and bustle. The vegetation mainly comprises eucalyptus forests that provide a perfect home for the park’s diverse wildlife population.

Wombats and superb lyrebirds are among the park’s residents that you wouldn’t want to miss. The rare and beautiful Imlay Mallee and Imlay Boronia can also be found near the mountain’s summit, making it a true botanical treasure trove.

In the heart of the park, a 2-hectare (4.9-acre) rainforest remnant survives in a fire-free gully, predominantly consisting of Black Olive Berry trees. This beautiful oasis offers a chance to escape to pristine landscapes and reconnect with nature.

The park’s geology is eclectic, with most of its lands formed during the Ordovician Period, ranging from 500 to 435 million years ago. These lands comprise metamorphosed rocks of the Mallacoota Beds, including sandstone, shale, and greywacke, which make up the Southern Highlands Fold Belt.

The summit of Mount Imlay and the upper slopes present a younger look, comprising rocks from the Devonian era, dating from 395 to 345 million years ago. These rocks are part of the Merimb
