Harald VIKE | Spirit of the Man (expired event)

Events Apr 6 - 28

10 Douglas Street, West Perth, WA 6005

Description

For many years Vike attempted to capture the compelling brilliance of the Australian light in paint.

Vike was a self-taught artist and from the time he moved from Norway to Perth (1927) until his death (1987) he was a dedicated and prolific in his practice. His love for Perth fuelled the creation of an impressive body of work (1930s and 1940s), showing a deep respect for nature and the environment, a passion for untamed landscapes and for the cultivated aspects of a city. He was also driven by an interest in people and had a great ability to capture the essence of personal character in quick sketches, detailed drawings and exaggerated caricatures.

Vike's life and work is reflected in this exhibition, drawing from the Janet Holmes à Court Collection, the WA Museum, the Museum of Performing Arts, North Metropolitan TAFE Collection, the Andrew Ross Collection and the Phillip and  Michele McNamara Collection.
