Description

Immortalised in the 1967 film Elvira Madigan, it’s a showcase of the composer’s skill at weaving a supremely lyrical melody into a full-bodied sound world. Shostakovich’s Fifth is one of the most dramatic and thrilling symphonies of the 20th century. Composed under acute political pressure during Stalin’s regime, Shostakovich may have veiled his symphony’s true meaning, but let nothing suppress its devastating musical power.
