Blue Highway - paintings by Helen Smith (expired event)

Events Apr 21 - May 19

Cathedral Square, Hay Street, Perth, WA 6000

Description

Respected and highly collected artist Helen Smith's geometric paintings examine notions of order, disorder and harmony.

'Blue Highway is a font, designed by Ray Larabie in 1996, based on Canada/US highway sign lettering. There are two things appealing about the font: firstly, the simple, even form and secondly, the name.'
[Helen Smith, interviewed by Jenepher Duncan, WA Focus, Art Gallery of Western Australia]

Helen Smith's practice spans painting, photography and site-specific installation that incorporates a minimalist approach to geometric forms, while reflecting her interest in social and cultural systems. Her working method is the same across the various media she employs and derives from her view of each work as a container for the idea.

Helen's work is represented in a number of collections including the National Gallery of Australia, Artbank, the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Curtin University of Technology, Murdoch University, Bankwest, Wesfarmers, Daimler Chrysler Foundation and Hebel_121.
