Description

Matthew Thorley is a visual artist investigating positive and negative space in the built environment. The exhibition will be the backdrop for a dance performance by choreographer Brooke Leeder.

Structural Dependency suggests movement or rather the desire for movement. Thorley constructs objects that encourage a state of flux and invite the viewer to respond physically. The subtle movement that takes place between the object, the viewer and this immersive space constructed by the artist; creates a tension and a desire to participate in this dance. These artworks prompt the viewer to practice a softened focus and acknowledge a moment of contemplation. Thorley endeavors to develop a contemporary articulation of a constructed space to pursue other lines of inquiry through the use of these objects.

Thorley’s process for making artwork emerges after engaging within a specific constructed space for extended periods of time. Over several separate visits, this contemplation of space allows various angles of inquiry to develop his paired back representations. His practice asks the viewer to consider the work as a static object aspiring to the act of movement, whilst simultaneously affording the viewer an appreciation of their own physical awareness within a given space.
