One of the most dynamic and provocative identities on the international art scene, the colourful, larger-than-life artist will put Perth on his Life Is Beautiful map through the blockbuster show. The exhibition will showcase the envelope-pushing work that has earned Mr. Brainwash a fan following across the world, from Madonna and Marvel Comics creator Stan Lee to Coca Cola and Lamborghini. Mr. Brainwash says he hopes Perth Is Beautiful will prompt Western Australians to see their capital city – and life – with fresh eyes. “I hope they will look at life through the eyes of their inner child and look at their cherished city as if it was for the first time, re-discovering it with excitement,” he said. “My work is meant to uplift people and remind them that life is beautiful, no matter what they are going through.” An iconic Mr. Brainwash 1.82m-tall spray can, a 3m-tall sculpture of a horse and an original signature Perth Is Beautiful artwork are just some of the highlights of the exhibition, which takes over Gullotti Galleries in Napoleon Street Cottesloe from 8 August until 19 September.

The New Land

Belvoir St Theatre artistic director Eamon Flack adapted Ibsen’s Ghosts for a 2017 Sydney production – and now his second cousin Thomas Dimmick is directing the show in Perth. Regarded as a scathing commentary on 19th-century morality, Ghosts is the story of Helene Alving who is about to open an orphanage in her late husband’s name. Her maid Regine is helping to prepare things, Regine’s carpenter father has been working on the building and Pastor Manders is organising the paperwork. At the same time, Helene’s son has also come back from Paris for the occasion. Henrik Ibsen’s Ghosts plays at 8pm August 11, 12, 13, 18, 19 and 20 with a 2pm matinee August 14. For its 65th edition, the contest saw 4,066 photographers from 130 countries enter 64,823 photographs. The winners were chosen by an independent jury awarding 24 winners and six honourable mentions.
