This current affair show, live on stage, is a provocative, insightful, and witty evening with international human rights judge and barrister Geoffrey Robertson QC. Geoffrey Robertson will analyse the current Australian and global politics, the current international turmoil, explain how fake news distorts democracy, what is really happening to the royal family, and his calls for Australian constitutional regeneration. He will explain what is happening to Julian Assange, how to stop the rich from inheriting the world, and the thinking behind ‘Bad People – and How to Be Rid of Them.’ The show will give an insight into his life and famous cases and his crusade to restore cultural property from museums around the world to the people from whom it was stolen.

‘Chinoiserie’, the Western appropriation of Asian aesthetics, briefly represented the height of fashion for European aristocracy during the early eighteenth century, before falling out of favour and being variously characterised as effeminate, immoral and transgressive. Today the style remains something of a guilty pleasure, via its undeniable aesthetic charm, but intensely problematic and kitsch appropriation of Asian culture. A Gentle Misinterpretation will transform FAC’s gallery spaces into an opulent, sensual and comedic exploration of one of Western culture’s most fascinating aesthetic curiosities. Taylor and Pugh have worked together to transform Taylor’s Niminjarra paintings, usually seen on canvas or paper, into highly tactile textile works, animating the important Niminjarra Jukurrpa (Dreaming). “Niminjarra is the two brothers transforming into a snake so they can come back home to Ngayartakujarra (Lake Dora). They were in training for ceremony, those two brothers, but they were kept too long, and nobody was there to release them. They waited then they decided to transform into snakes to travel back to where they came from, because their mother was waiting for them. This is Jukurrpa (Dreaming story).” — Desmond Taylor, 2019 This body of work is born of Taylor’s desire to see his artworks reimagined through a textile medium and is a contemporary crafting of important ancestral stories deeply rooted in Warnman Ngurra (Country). The dynamic intercultural collaboration between Desmond Taylor and textiles practitioner and educator Mariaan Pugh continues the practice of cultural and creative exchange, driven by Taylor and other Martu artists through Martumili Artists, sharing narratives and understandings of the world from the Great Sandy, Little Sandy and Gibson deserts with national and international audiences.

This City of Fremantle Art Collection exhibition presents a series of Ferrier’s new print works and short animated videos alongside a survey of her internationally renowned Angry Underwear project. Continuing Ferrier’s decades-long feminist practice, the new body of digital prints use photo-montage processes to reassemble ‘taboo’ 1980’s Playboy centrefolds. Challenging misogynistic gender ideals and giving voice to feminine authority, Ferrier reimagines women’s bodies from passive, objectified figures into dynamic surrealist forms. The new works featured in Pop Porn were developed while Ferrier was in residence at Fremantle Arts Centre in 2021.

Presenting the results of the foundation’s annual photo contest, the annual World Press Photo Exhibition showcases the best photojournalism and documentary photography of the last year. For its 65th edition, the contest saw 4,066 photographers from 130 countries enter 64,823 photographs. The winners were chosen by an independent jury awarding 24 winners and six honourable mentions. The works of each of the winning photographers a represented in this exhibition. Step outside the news cycle and think critically about important topics in our world.

STRUT Dance invites audiences to witness a double bill that celebrates independent contemporary dance from Western Australia. 2022 marks STRUT Dance’s inaugural season of GROUNDWORKS; a platform that offers unique and essential support for mid-length presentation for independent choreographers, allowing them to present performance works in front of an audience, in a theatre setting. GROUNDWORKS 2022 incorporates a blend of contemporary dance, sound, light, and set that celebrates live performance in the theatre; a place where an audience can gather and be transported into another realm. About each performance TITLE: Killjoy Within the confines of an office space, doom descends upon two workers caught in corporate submission. Time is irrelevant here. Inspired by the Japanese ’salary man’ phenomenon, Killjoy is a cult horror film meets live dance-theatre. Green Day were heavily involved in the musical’s development from its first iteration at the Berkeley Repertory and to Broadway and beyond – Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong also stepped into the critical role of St. Jimmy on Broadway a few times during its run. The musical made it’s debut on Broadway in 2010 and features the hits “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “21 Guns,” “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” “Holiday” and the blockbuster title track “American Idiot”. Also included in the score are several songs from Green Day’s 2009 release “21st Century Breakdown,” and an unreleased love song, “When It’s Time.” It tells the story of three friends, Johnny, Will and Tunny - each searching for meaning in a post 9/11 America, discovering love, loss, drugs, sex and rock and roll along the way. American Idiot will be directed by Artistic Director of Midnite, Gregory Jones, with musical direction by Jarrod Van Dort conducting an eight-person live band. "We are excited to bring this explosive rock opera to life", says Midnite's Director, Gregory Jones. “It’s a high-octane show with strong social messages that are relevant today, providing an opportunity for young people to challenge their decision making and express themselves.” The production brings together a talented ensemble of year 11 and 12 students from a range of schools throughout WA. Based at Christ Church Grammar School, Midnite has a reputation for producing outstanding productions and nurturing young and upcoming WA talent. Belvoir St Theatre artistic director Eamon Flack adapted Ibsen’s Ghosts for a 2017 Sydney production – and now his second cousin Thomas Dimmick is directing the show in Perth. Regarded as a scathing commentary on 19th-century morality, Ghosts is the story of Helene Alving who is about to open an orphanage in her late husband’s name. Her maid Regine is helping to prepare things, Regine’s carpenter father has been working on the building and Pastor Manders is organising the paperwork. At the same time, Helene’s son has also come back from Paris for the occasion. Henrik Ibsen’s Ghosts plays at 8pm August 11, 12, 13, 18, 19 and 20 with a 2pm matinee August 14. Using characters from Doctor Who’s classic era, Lethbridge-Stewart: Blue Blood is an action-packed thriller best described as “sci-fi horror”. Bodies of missing people around the world start turning up, as if ripped apart by wild animals, seemingly linked to an experiment gone wrong 30 years ago in World War II. “Given the horror elements in my novel, the Perth Horror Film Festival seemed an ideal place to do a book signing,” Thomas said. “Many Doctor Who stories themselves have drawn on horror classics such as Frankenstein, Dracula and The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde or styles of horror, including Nordic noir. “They all have a broody atmosphere that draws you in but add a science-fiction twist along the way. “On August 20, the Perth Horror Film Festival is having its own night of sci-fi horror with several local short films evoking the theme and the main feature, The Day the Earth Caught Fire.” Thomas will be signing copies of his novel, available for $20 cash, from 6pm August 19 and 20 and 1pm August 21.

Whatever the reason, fans of the genre are in for some good news – the first annual Perth Horror Film Festival is ready to engage you in plenty of fear, suspense and terror with a variety of popular movies and independent shorts. From August 19 to 21, the Perth Horror Fans are taking over The Backlot Perth for three days of terrifying chills, bloody deaths and audience screams. Perth Horror Fans director Vanessa Gudgeon said the festival had been curated by genre fans – for genre fans. “The program showcases the incredible talents of local horror and science-fiction short filmmakers, paired with classic feature films that are rarely screened in Australia,” she said. “There are lots of prizes being given away across the three days. Audience members are able to have their say by voting for their pick of best short film. “The goal is to inspire filmmakers to uphold the standards of genre filmmaking in WA, while still being given the freedom to make the films they want.”

Mama Red & the Dark Blues take listeners on a musical journey to Hades via Lost Love Canyon, Near Miss Alley and Shotgun Street – and bring them out feeling like they’ve ridden a thousand miles on a horse named Sorrow, but lived to tell the tale. Described as ‘Alt-Country-Pop with a hint of blues’, but messing with genres, gender stereotypes and refusing to be stylistically confined, the band’s eclecticism and originality is part of their charm. After a (more than) five year wait, the band is releasing their new conscious concept album, Long Way to Redemption, at Lyric’s Underground. The band has evolved, and hard hitting social, environmental, political and personal themes bring both pathos and positivity to this release.
