Description

In order to reinvigorate a declining main street, the council adopted a radical urban design approach, seeking to implement a 'Shared Space' in Bay View Terrace.

Shared Spaces require restraint on behalf of the designer to ensure that the fundamental messages and signals upon which we rely upon to navigate spaces safely are not lost amongst a cornucopia of urban elements.

A focus on improving pedestrian amenity helped shape the project philosophy and objective of creating a "high quality, pedestrian orientated, external environment which accommodates the diverse needs of pedestrians, retail outlets & vehicles to create a vibrant and flexible public realm."

This was achieved through a variety of means such as an elegant yet purposefully understated granite paving palette and consistent tree alignment and spacing which when combined provide strong visual clues to dictate user behavior.
