Description

The Kauaeranga Visitor Centre is a Department of Conservation (DOC) facility located in the Coromandel Forest Park in New Zealand.

It serves as a gateway to the Kauaeranga Valley, the Coromandel Forest Park, and the Northern Coromandel region. The centre is staffed by DOC rangers who have first-hand, in-depth local knowledge about conservation places and activities. They can provide visitors with information about walks and hiking trails, track conditions, weather, and safety, hut and campsite bookings, heritage sites, cycleways, maps, marine reserves, conservation projects, and local stories, legends, and history.

The visitor centre is open daily from 8:30 am to 4 pm during off-peak/shoulder season and from 8:30 am to 5 pm during peak summer season. It is closed on Christmas day and during severe weather. The centre has toilets inside and 24-hour toilets at the end of the car park, as well as refreshments and camping supplies. Visitors can also get filtered water from a tap and view displays on the cultural, historic, and natural features of the Kauaeranga Valley.

The Kauaeranga Visitor Centre is a great starting point for exploring the Coromandel Forest Park and the Northern Coromandel region. Visitors can plan their trip around Hauraki Coromandel along State Highways 25 & 2. Please note that some local roads and DOC sites may be closed. The DOC manages 14,000 km of tracks, 10 Great Walks, and a network of 950 huts and 324 campsites. Visitors can tag the centre using thecoromandel or goodforyoursoul in social media. The centre is located at 995C Kauaeranga Valley Road, Thames 3577, and its postal address is PO Box 343, Thames 3540. Visitors can contact the centre by phone at +64 7 867 9080, by fax at +64 4 471 1117, or by email at kauaerangavc@doc.govt.nz. The centre is part of the DOC, which has visitor centres nationwide.
