Description

Glenlyon Dam, also known as Pike Creek Reservoir, is an impressive earth and rockfill dam located in Queensland.

It is situated near the state's border with New South Wales, west of the towns of Stanthorpe and Texas. Built in 1976 on Pike Creek, the dam wall stands 5 km (3.1 mi) upstream from the confluence of the Mole River and Severn River, both of which branch from the Dumaresq River.

Covering an area of about 1,750 hectares at full supply level, Glenlyon Dam has a catchment area of 1,295 square kilometres. With a capacity of 254,000 megalitres, it serves as an important water source for irrigation purposes. The dam is managed by SunWater, a government-owned corporation.

Glenlyon Dam offers a variety of recreational activities, including swimming, fishing, boating, and water skiing. Boating enthusiasts can enjoy unrestricted boating, except near the dam wall. There are two boat ramps that provide easy access to the dam. Visitors can also explore the upper reaches of feeder creeks, where they can discover large areas of standing timber and submerged logs.

The dam has experienced both droughts and floods. In December 1994, it reached a critically low level of 2.2% due to droughts in Australia. During the 2010-2011 Queensland floods, the dam reached a peak of 110.78%, a significant increase from its previously critical low levels.

Fishing at Glenlyon Dam is a popular activity. The dam is stocked
