Welcome to Tamala Park

The large locality of Tamala Park extends from the Joondalup railway line in the east, to the coast of the Indian Ocean, where it leads onto Burns Beach to the south and Claytons Beach in Mindarie to the north. Two arterial roads, Marmion Avenue and Connolly Drive, run through it and link the suburbs on each side.

The area is mostly unoccupied bushland, primarily used as a landfill and recycling centre, with the Tamala Park Recycling Centre located there off Marmion Avenue.

Inside my neighbourhood

Tamala Park is part of the City of Wanneroo local government area and sits within the City’s Established Coastal Place Management Area. The suburb sits on the border between the City of Wanneroo and the City of Joondalup local authorities.

The area is currently unpopulated, however, in 2006 the Tamala Park Regional Council (TPRC) was established specifically to develop 180 hectares of land in Clarkson and Mindarie in Perth’s northern suburbs, known as the Tamala Park Project. The Project is marketed as Catalina Estate.

Origin of name and history

The Mooro group of Noongar were familiar with the area and several of their traditional stories and legends refer to local Tamala Park land features, such as Waukolup Hill, although evidence suggests that they lived much further east, closer to modern day Wanneroo Road.

A suburb proposed by the City of Wanneroo to replace portions of Mindarie, Clarkson and Burns Beach. The name ‘Tamala’ is derived from the type of limestone from which the dominant sand type is found in the vicinity. This suburb is used for refuse disposal and public open space and was formally named on 9 September 1988.
