Lisgar Gardens is a well-established garden in Hornsby, Sydney, known for its range of Camellias and stunning floral landscapes.
It boasts an area of 2.6 hectares and features over 90 varieties of camellias, along with other plants like rhododendrons, azaleas, and gardenias. The gardens are located on a hillside, providing a secluded refuge from the busy city.
The gardens were established on a steep hillside with sandstone block walls that create different levels. They were originally purchased in 1917 by Dr. Max Cotton, an academic horticulturist and Camellia enthusiast. In the 1950s, Max formed a friendship with Professor Eben Gowrie Waterhouse, and together they planted 72 varieties of camellias. In 1967, the property was bought by Hornsby Shire Council and opened to the public as Lisgar Gardens in 1968.
Lisgar Gardens is rich in history, with some of the original camellias still existing today. Visitors can explore a variety of features, including a shade house with fish ponds, a gazebo, three waterfalls, informal lawn areas, picnic tables, and a rainforest walk.
The garden's picturesque location and flora make it a popular choice for weddings and special occasions. It offers a covered pavilion for weddings and can be hired for special occasions, group excursions, or professional photography and filming. Bookings must comply with government regulations and health guidelines.
To reach Lisgar Gardens, visitors are asked to park in surrounding streets due to restricted parking in Lisgar Road.
