Ulupna Island

Ulupna Island, located in Northern Victoria, is a popular camping and wildlife destination.

Known for its scenic beauty and rich flora and fauna, the island is surrounded by the Murray River and its anabranch, Ulupna Creek. The island is part of the flood plain of the Murray River and is situated at the eastern end of the Barmah National Park, which is a part of the largest river red gum forest in Victoria, Australia.

Ulupna Island is easily accessible from the nearest town, Strathmerton. It is a preferred location among campers for its serene atmosphere and wildlife sightings. Throughout the year, visitors are greeted by a diverse range of wildlife on the island, including goannas, eastern grey kangaroos, and koalas.

In 1991, a significant area of the western part of Ulupna Island was designated as a flora reserve, known as Ulupna Island Flora Reserve. This vast reserve covers an area of 340 hectares (840 acres) of land on the former Register of the National Estate. The Ulupna Island Flora Reserve is recognized for its natural significance and forms a part of the Barmah National Park since 2010.

The flora reserve is mainly characterized by river red gum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis) open forest. The area houses a plethora of plant species, including two rare and endangered species, the Mueller daisy (Brachyscome muelleroides) and Reader's daisy (Brachyscome readeri).
