Description

South Brisbane Memorial Park in City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia is home to the South Brisbane Dry Dock, also known as the Government Graving Dock.

Designed by William David Nisbet and constructed between 1876 and 1881, it is Australia's third oldest dry dock still in existence. The dock was initially built to provide maintenance, repair, and refitting facilities for commercial ships, dredges, barges, and other vessels.

The South Brisbane Dry Dock was in use until 1972, with an average of 60 vessels per year utilizing the dock. During World War II, it played a crucial role in supporting the war effort. The U-shaped dock, located opposite the former South Brisbane Municipal Chambers, measures 320 feet (98 m) long and expanded to 420 feet (130 m) long by 1887. It is lined with puddled clay and concreted with rubble mixed concrete, with steps made of Lockyer Creek freestone. The bottom of the dock is covered with hardwood keel blocks, Portland cement, and bricks topped with Melbourne granite blocks.

Within the South Brisbane Memorial Park, there are other historic buildings, including a brick pump house with a large chimney and arched roof. Originally equipped with two centrifugal pumps and steam boilers, it was later replaced with electric motors. The dock master's office and a 15-tonne crane built by Ransomes & Rapier of Ipswich also remain on the eastern side of the dock.
