Description

Historical baptist church in the heart of Pingelly

The first Baptist service was held on 24 March 1901, by a Home Missionary, Mr H. Horsey. Early in 1903, the first work was carried out on the foundations of the church. In September 1904, The West Australian provided a detailed description of the new building: "The Pingelly opening services, in connection with the Baptist Church, last Sunday [18th], were conducted, at the request of the pastor, the Rev. H. Horsey, and officers by the rev. F. H. Radford, superintendent of the G.S.R. Baptist Home Missions.. Large congregations gathered, including representatives of churches and Christian Endeavourers, who arrived by train on the preceding day....At this service, the rev. gentleman gave a clear and lucid address on 'the teaching and practice of the Baptist Church', and conducted in the church the first baptismal service in Pingelly, by immersion, each of the candidates speaking to a large audience. ...The church is built of granite stone, with brick quoins, and cemented copings.

A large circular window of stained glass ornaments the front of the building. The windows are Gothic, and fitted with lead-lights. The seating is composed of chairs, and the furniture includes a fine Cornish organ. The whole appearance of the interior and exterior of the building is very pleasing, and will considerably augment the architectural beauty of the town." In 1909, a Manse was constructed nearby, its official opening being in August.
