Decibel New Music Ensemble: Twin Peaks Was 30

Events May 9 - 11 PICA — Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts

51 James St, Perth, WA 6000

Description

In celebration of the 30th anniversary of David Lynch’s Twin Peaks film *Fire Walk With Me* (1992), WA-founded music ensemble Decibel makes a progressive environment with red velvet and portals.

Experience a series of unfolding compositions in a unique concert environment that pays tribute to the theme song’s composer, Angelo Badalamenti, and featured singer, Julee Cruise, with a 30-minute reworking of the original film score. Expect synth instrumentals and Cruise-inspired songs backed by signature twanging guitars and reverb-drenched soundscapes.

With lighting by celebrated designer Jenny Hector, the program features new compositions by Decibel’s composers as well as works by Australian artists (and Twin Peaks die-hards) James Rushford (VIC), Thembi Soddell (VIC) and new commissions by Rebecca E Smith (WA) and Matt Warren (TAS).

Twin Peaks Was 30 is the second in the Decibel Was series that celebrates important dates in retrospect. It continues the ensemble’s ongoing explorations of arranging film and pop music for chamber music performances, adapting work from Ennio Morricone, Lalo Schifrin, Scott Walker, Low and others.

Presented by PICA and Tura.

Enjoy a complimentary Twin Peaks-inspired drink with your ticket.

About the Artist

Decibel is a six-piece new music ensemble focusing on the integration of acoustic and electronic instruments into chamber music performance. Decibel aims to remove stylistic boundaries in their commissioning and performance approaches, which often combine new commissions, arrangements, sound art and improvisation. Their unique focus on digital scores and new performance approaches has led to a wide range of concert and recorded experiences that have been shared across Australia, Japan, Malaysia, the UK and Europe. They have twice received the APRA/AMC Award for Excellence in Experimental Music and their UK performances in late 2022 were referred to as “spellbinding and revelatory” (The Reviews Hub, 2022). Their most recent album. ‘After Julia’, was released by Australian label Tall Poppies in 2023, with the ensemble’s performance described as “utterly masterful” (Loudmouth, 2023).
