Description

Nimbin Rocks are a group of volcanic extrusions of rhyolite that were formed around 20 million years ago.

They hold great geological and cultural importance as they were created by volcanic eruptions from the Mount Warning Tweed Volcano. Located just outside the present-day caldera wall, they are about 20 kilometers from Mount Warning and three kilometers from Nimbin village.

The Nimbin Rocks consist of a group of eroded dykes that are spread across an area. The three most prominent rocks, known as the Thimble, Cathedral, and Needle, rise from the ground and offer panoramic views of the surroundings. Visitors can trek up the rocks to enjoy these natural wonders.

In addition to their geological significance, the Nimbin Rocks hold historical and cultural importance for the local Bundjalung tribe. According to Aboriginal beliefs, these rocks were the home of the Nmbngee, or Clever Men, and were used as initiation grounds for young boys. To learn more about the Dreamtime stories and the significance of these rocks, visitors can visit the Nimbin Museum.

To visit Nimbin Rocks, one can drive to Nimbin village and then cover the remaining distance on foot. The walk is worth the effort, as it offers captivating views and a chance to experience the history associated with the site. The Nimbin Rocks also make for a perfect picnic spot and an ideal place for a day trip excursion. Visitors are expected to be respectful of the area's cultural significance and leave the site as they find it.
