Description
Come and commemorate those long ago servicemen and women at a memorial built to their memory.
The outpouring of respect and appreciation for those who fought at Gallipoli one hundred and nine years ago led a community in the new suburb of Mount Hawthorn to construct a memorial. It also provided a home for a returned wounded soldier and his family. Those long-ago citizens contributed their meagre funds, materials and skills to this ambitious project, a brick and tile building constructed in one day.
This emotion is reflected in the annual ANZAC Day commemorations at that memorial, ANZAC Cottage, at 38 Kalgoorlie Street, Mount Hawthorn. The Cottage will be open to the community on Thursday, April 25, from 4 pm to 6 pm.
Commemorations will include the Field of Remembrance, honouring the ancestors of community members, a children’s wearable art activity, and our annual visit from the remarkable Maori Cultural group, Ngaru Pou, ensuring that the “NZ” in ANZAC is never forgotten.
The day concludes at 5 pm with the evocative Sunset Service, a community-based commemoration featuring the younger generation.
Entry is free, and all are welcome.
