Description

Mitchell River National Park is a natural wonder located in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, approximately 2,140 km (1,330 mi) northeast of Perth.

This stunning park is adjacent to the boundary of the Prince Regent National Park and is located within the traditional lands of the Wunambal Aboriginal people, who have lived in the area for thousands of years.

Ngauwudu or the Mitchell Plateau, as it is also known, has remained unchanged for over 50,000 years, and the Wunambal people form part of a cultural bloc of Aboriginal peoples known as Wanjina Wunggurr. Europeans discovered the area in 1821 and named it the Mitchell River after the then Premier of Western Australia. In the 1960s, Amax Bauxite started mining on the plateau. Although the park was formed in 2000, the traditional owners did not give their consent, and proper procedures under the Native Title Act 1993 were not followed. The park area falls into the Uunguu (Wunambal Gaambera) area of the Wanjina Wunggurr peoples, and the WA Parks and Wildlife Service manage it jointly with the Wunambal Gaambera. In March 2015, the Government of Western Australia agreed to a ban on mining, allowing protection over 1,750 km2 (680 sq mi) of the area. Plans for a huge Kimberley National Park covering more than 20,000 km2 (7,700 sq mi
