Description

Lake Hugh Muntz in Mermaid Waters is a 17-hectare lake constructed in the early 1980s as part of the Robina Masterplan.

It is one of the first urban lakes developed in Queensland and is part of the area's stormwater drainage system. The lake has a depth of up to 12 meters and a volume of approximately 280 Olympic swimming pools.

The lake often experiences blue-green algal blooms, some of which can affect water quality and be harmful to humans. Caution is advised when using the lake, and regular laboratory testing is conducted. It is important not to enter the lake if scum is visible or the water is discolored. Additionally, it is recommended not to swim in the waterbodies for 3 days after a rainfall event.

Water quality monitoring and reporting of the lake follow the guidelines of the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC). The alert level is classified into three levels: Red, Amber, and Green Level alert. Each level has specific criteria based on microcystins, M. aeruginosa cells, and cyanobacteria biovolume.

Lake Hugh Muntz offers a picturesque view and is ideal for photography lovers. Visitors can still enjoy the lakeside, have a picnic, or BBQ with their families and friends.

Lake Hugh Muntz can be visited throughout the year, but it is important to check the alert level before planning a visit. Suitable water quality for swimming cannot be guaranteed due to the lake's challenges and other factors beyond control.
