Description

Snorkelling at McKenzies Beach, located just south of Malua Bay, is recommended for experienced snorkellers due to its rugged surf.

The beach is surrounded by two headlands with rocks that create natural reefs, making it an ideal spot for fit and experienced snorkelling enthusiasts.

At McKenzies Beach, snorkellers can explore the unique marine life found within the spectacular rock formations. The ampitheatre around the rocks on the southern end of the beach is a must-see location. To access the ampitheatre, enter the water round the corner facing Jimmy's Island. The water depth ranges from five to eight metres deep, and it is home to fascinating marine life such as baby cuttlefish.

The northern end of the beach offers an exposed long reef to explore, influenced by wave and current movements. This reef system is shallower and well protected during nor-easter conditions, making it an ideal spot for snorkelling. It is important to ensure that the conditions are perfect before entering the water, as the underwater visibility can be impacted by the swell.

To get to McKenzies Beach, drive south from Batemans Bay to the end of Beach Road, then turn left onto George Bass Drive. Look out for a turnoff on the left into a small carpark just past Malua Bay newline.
