Description

Presiding at the gateway to the enticing Tamar Valley Wine Region, Legana Estate, now Velo, has been at the forefront of innovation and tradition here for over 50 years.

At Vélo, handpicked fruit is nurtured from vine to bottle, producing outstanding, handcrafted wines. The wines are carefully selected from classic French varieties that particularly suit the Tasmanian climate. Hand picking, hand plunging and gentle basket pressing reflect in the character of the wines. Velo is a combination of passion for great wine, food and art. The small family operated vineyard is an example of how old and new worlds meld. While retaining traditional methods of harvesting and winemaking, their contemporary image reflects the fun, energy, passion and lifestyle in which they immerse themselves.

#The Wine Based at the entrance to the beautiful Tamar Valley in Northern Tasmania, The 0.9ha of cabernet sauvignon and 0.5ha of pinot noir of the Legana Vineyard were planted in 1966 by Graham Wiltshire - described as one of the three great pioneers of the Tasmanian wine industry. Originally named Chateau Legana, Velo is home to Tasmania’s oldest cabernet sauvignon wines. Varietals grown onsite, are pinot noir, cabernet sauvignon, shiraz, sauvignon blanc, riesling, pinot gris and chardonnay.

#History Established in 1966 as Legana Estate by two icons of Tasmanian Wine, Graham Wiltshire and Michael Curtis, the wines we produce are testament to the legacy they began and hold true to the values of boutique new world Tasmanian wine. Cabernet, Shiraz, Merlot and Pinot Noir were among the first plants to be transported here and our Cabernet in particular has weathered the cool climate and evolved to produce the oldest Cabernet vines in Tasmania. The vineyard was re-branded from Legana Estate to Velo Wines in 2001 by Michael and Mary Wilson as a tribute to his career as an Olympic cyclist. In 2017 Peter Bond, Ken Hudson and David Vautin purchased Legana Estate under the guidance of former Moore’s Hill founder Rod Thorpe. Rod has implemented a voracious vineyard management strategy that has now steered the vineyard to record yields, both in volume and quality.
