ABOUT THE FILM

Executive Produced by Lupita Nyong'o, Cannes Film Festival winner Goodbye Julia is an engrossing, and emotionally rewarding Sudanese drama about two women who form a connection across devastating divides.

The first Sudanese film to Premiere at Cannes and winner of this year’s Un Certain Regard - Freedom Prize, director Mohamed Kordofani (Nyerkuk)’s Goodbye Julia is a powerful drama. Mona (Eiman Yousif), an upper-middle-class former popular singer from the North seeks to attenuate her feelings of guilt for causing the death of a Southern man by employing Julia (Siran Riak), his unsuspecting widow, as her maid.

Unable to confess her transgressions, she decides to leave the past behind, unaware that the country’s turmoil may find its way into her home and put her face to face with her sins.

REVIEWS AND ACCOLADES

WINNER Prix de la Liberté (Freedom Award) Cannes Film Festival 2023 "Kordofani’s fine direction balances the film’s multiple modes: It’s a drama, with shades of a thriller and a sense of its own politics." Hollywood Reporter

"A gut-wrenching and emotionally rewarding tale of religious persecution compounded by entrenched racism, Goodbye Julia may be set in Sudan between 2005 and 2010 but feels deeply pertinent and, unfortunately, timeless." Screen International
