Description

Khancoban Pondage is a three kilometre long lake located in the town of Khancoban, forming part of the Snowy Mountains Hydro Scheme.

The town itself is an interesting example of the 1940s Workers' Settlements.

With the backdrop of Australia's highest snow-capped mountains, Khancoban Pondage offers stunning views. The surroundings are a photographer's paradise, with vibrant wildflowers in the Spring and colorful falling leaves in Autumn.

The lake is accessible for various forms of fishing, from bank angling to flyfishing. It is home to a variety of fish, including Brown, Rainbow, and Brook Trout. Anglers can enjoy catching fish up to 3.7 kg in the late season. Boats are well catered for with an easy access cemented boat ramp.

The best times to visit Khancoban Pondage are in Spring and Autumn when the surroundings are alive with vibrant wildflowers and foliage. If you are traveling from Melbourne, Khancoban Pondage is approximately a 5-hour drive away, while it is a 2.5-hour drive from Canberra. Coming from Sydney, it's an approximately 6-hour drive.
