Description

Herdsman Lake Regional Park is a freshwater lake located in the suburb of Herdsman, just 6 kilometres northwest of Perth, Western Australia.

The lake measures approximately 2.5 kilometres in length and 2 kilometres in width, totaling over 3 square kilometres. It features a main shared-use path around the lake that is approximately 8 kilometres in length, with a wetland perimeter of approximately 7.5 kilometres. The lake is a wildlife sanctuary and a popular spot for birdwatching, with over 160 species of bird recorded.

The Herdsman Lake is a dredged lake that provides permanent open water covering 15% of the area during the dry summer months. In summer, most of the lake is dry, with only 15% being permanent deep water. It was once considered as a possible water supply for Perth in the 1830s and was almost used as an alternative airport in 1936. Today, Herdsman Lake is declared a regional park, with almost 80% of the lake covered with Typha rush, an introduced weed.

The Herdsman Lake Regional Park offers several attractions, including the Olive Seymour Boardwalk, a discovery center, and Settler's Cottage. Visitors can also find a statue created by Pietro Porcelli, which was formerly located on the demolished AMP Chambers building and has now been rescued and positioned on one of the islands. The park provides disabled access, and visitors can enjoy activities such as picnicking, walking, cycling, wildflower spotting, and birdwatching.
