Description

Cooby Dam is a rock-fill embankment dam located in Groomsville, approximately 17 km (11 mi) north of Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia.

It was completed in 1942 and serves as the potable water supply for the Toowoomba region. The dam has a capacity of 23,100 megalitres (5.1x10^9 imp gal; 6.1x10^9 US gal) when full.

The dam structure is 32 metres (105 ft) high and 207 metres (679 ft) long, with a fill capacity of 71-thousand-cubic-metre (2.5x10^6 cu ft). It has a catchment area of 169 square kilometres (65 sq mi) and creates an unnamed reservoir with a surface area of 301 hectares (740 acres) and a maximum depth of 12.5 metres (41 ft) when full.

Cooby Dam's uncontrolled un-gated spillway can discharge 680 cubic metres per second (24,000 cu ft/s). It is managed by the Toowoomba Region Council.

In 2010, Cooby Dam's lowest usable storage volume dropped to 8% due to drought conditions. In 2006, there was a public outcry and a referendum rejected the plans to place recycled water into the dam. Fishing is a popular activity at Cooby Dam, but a stocked impoundment permit is required.
