Nestled on the slopes of Nandewar Ranges, Wagun Picnic Area in Deriah Aboriginal Area near Mount Kaputar National Park and Narrabri is an ideal place for a family get-together.

The picnic area offers a tranquil bush setting where visitors can enjoy spectacular views across the cypress ironbark forest. There are plenty of activities to keep visitors engaged, including a visit to the Culture Sculpture loop walk and Biruu gaba lookout walking track.

The Culture Sculpture loop walk located in Wagun Picnic Area is a short walk where visitors can see several sculptures of animals. These sculptures feature in traditional stories and represent totems for the Gamilaraay People. The walk provides meaningful insights into the unique culture of the Gamilaraay People. ‘How the goanna got its stripes’ and ‘Why the brush turkey lays its eggs in the ground’ are some of the stories fascinating stories that children will enjoy discovering.

After the walk, visitors can relax and indulge in a barbecue lunch while basking in the tranquil views of the cypress ironbark forest. Besides enjoying a family get-together, visitors interested in birdwatching can keep an eye out for the diamond firetail, speckled warbler, and the brown treecreeper.
