Description

Nyinyikay, an Indigenous Australian community situated on Arnhem Bay in East Arnhem Land, offers a unique opportunity for non-Indigenous visitors to gain insight into traditional Aboriginal culture. Visitors will learn how to collect, cook and hunt foods such as shellfish, mud crabs, fish, yams, turtle eggs, bush honey and more with the men. They will also discover the art of recognizing termite hollowed out trees and preparing them to create a yidaki (didgeridoo).

The women will work with the family’s senior and skilled weavers to prepare pandanus leaves, dye them with natural dyes and use them to make woven objects. Visitors will also have the chance to hear about Nyinyikay’s ancestral stories and history, including their connection and interaction with the Macasssan people from Sulawesi over a period of 600 years.
