Description

Located in the Windjana Gorge National Park, 145km east of Derby in the far north of Western Australia, Time Walk is an easy yet stunning 2-kilometre return bush walk that takes you through a Devonian reef gorge system, unlike any other in the Kimberley.

The Windjana Gorge that we see today is a result of the Lennard River gouging its way through the Napier Range, which exposed a diverse rock formation that is unique to this area. It was once a shallow sea covering the area around 350 million years ago. The Top Trail of Time Walk has several interpretive signs from different periods, showing how long this formation has existed.

The trail begins from the trailhead at the car park, where you walk towards the grey and orange rock face, from which you can see the river winding through the gorge. Accessible through a small gap-like tunnel, you will emerge on the other side of the gorge into the shady, cool, and green area. The shaded oasis is an excellent spot to view the wildlife, more notably freshwater crocodiles that bask on the beach or float in the water's calm pools. You can also see a variety of birdlife, including flocks of Corollas, at the cliff walls and trees.

The months from April to October are the ideal time to visit the Windjana Gorge National Park as the temperatures are mild, and the water levels are ideal for swimming. If you wish to avoid large crowds, it is best to avoid the park during the peak season of July and August.
