Description

Border Loop Lookout Cougal is a historic landmark offering stunning views of Border Ranges National Park.

Located in Cougal, the lookout provides a unique and panoramic view of the park and McPherson Range. It also offers a bird's-eye view of the historic spiral loop, which was an important railway project linking Australia's two capital cities.

The Border Loop, also known as the Spiral Loop, was the first standard gauge railway that linked two capital cities in Australia. Constructed after World War I, it played a significant role in the country's development and remains an essential landmark for the region.

At Border Loop Lookout, visitors can enjoy the scenic vistas of Border Ranges National Park, a World Heritage site. There are hiking trails to explore and a picnic area near the lookout for BBQs with friends and family. The nearby Border Loop Walk is a great option for hikers who want to delve deeper into the park.

The best time to visit the lookout is during the autumn or winter months, between March and August, when the weather is milder and the skies are clearer. This ensures an unobstructed view of the entire park without the summer haze.

To get to Border Loop Lookout, it is easily accessible by car. It is a 40-minute drive from the heart of Gold Coast and 2 hours and 30 minutes from Brisbane. Visitors can follow the Pacific Highway until reaching the M1 Motorway, then take the exit onto the Summerland Way. From there, turn right onto Hootons Road and follow the signs to Cougal. Once in Cougal, turn right onto Cougal Loop Road and then left to reach the lookout. Free parking is available on-site.
