Description

Located in the south-west region of Western Australia, Lake Kepwari is a man-made reservoir formerly known as Western Five.

It used to be a coal mine operated by Wesfarmers Premier Coal from 1970 until 1996. The lake is spread across 103 hectares and can hold approximately 30 gigalitres of water. Rehabilitation works have been ongoing since 2003, and it took about five years to fill the lake with water from Collie River South.

Lake Kepwari is now being developed as a community aquatic recreation facility. The government allocated A$3.29 million for recreational development in 2008, resulting in a range of activities for visitors. Fishing, water skiing, kayaking, and swimming are popular water activities at the lake. There are picnic areas, gas barbeques, and campsites available for visitors to enjoy.

Fishing is permitted at the lake, with redfin perch and marron being common catches. The lake's opening was delayed in the past due to low pH levels in the water, which raised concerns about public safety. The acidity is believed to be caused by groundwater leakage containing high levels of iron. To address this issue, an Environmental Impact Assessment was conducted in 2009 to explore the effects of reconnecting the Collie River South to the lake. Lake Kepwari was officially opened in December 2020 as part of a larger investment in the area's infrastructure to promote tourism.
