Origin of name and history

Did you know that Banksia Grove was formerly named Cockman after the early settler family of James and Mary Ann Cockman?

The Cockman family were early settlers of the Swan River Colony, arriving in 1829. James arrived aboard the Callista as an indentured servant of George Leake and Mary Ann arrived aboard the Atwick, also as an indentured servant. Their marriage in 1830 was the first Anglican marriage in the colony.

James and Mary Ann settled in the Wanneroo Area back in 1860 where the heritage listed Cockman House still remains. Formally part of the Neerabup area, Banksia Grove was renamed in June 1999, after the abundance of banksia flowers that are native to the area.
