Craig Sheiles Homes Beachside Display Home

Residential Designs

Description

With equal focus on indoor and outdoor living, life is a (sea) breeze at this contemporary beach house.

The brief for this “dream home by the ocean” was to successfully combine the joys of coastal living with the conveniences of a modern home.

The home needed to be low maintenance yet hardwearing and the design team at Craig Sheiles Homes took this into consideration, particularly when it came to protecting the west facing home against the sun and wind, without sacrificing views or functionality.

A large kitchen was also part of the design brief and reflecting homeowners’ demands for style in every facet of modern homes, the Craig Sheiles Homes’ in-house architect paid particular attention to the design of wet areas as well as the traditional bedrooms, bathroom and living areas.

Passive solar design and cross flow ventilation were other considerations that needed to be taken into account, as were the strict Harbour Rise design guidelines affecting all projects in the exclusive estate overlooking Hillarys Boat Harbour.

Finally, all this had to be fitted on a small residential lot with rear garage access.

Appropriately titled The Edge, this home captures all that is great about life by the water, while retaining the mod cons one expects from a modern home.

A U-shaped plan protects the courtyard from strong winds and harsh sunsets, while also allowing views through the home towards the street.

Additionally, the central courtyard provides a protective environment for both outdoor dining and living and brings both together.

West-facing windows around the home are protected from the elements by cantilevered eaves and the balcony, yet come wintertime, careful planning ensures the home receives maximum natural sunlight.

Moving indoors, high-end European fixtures and fittings feature throughout the home and belie the fitout’s modest budget.

A large kitchen boasts an ample food preparation scullery, freeing up the island bar for entertaining.

Easy-to-clean and low maintenance surfaces feature throughout both storeys of the home and include limestone floors downstairs and hardwearing bamboo upstairs.

Contemporary in design and energy-efficient, the home was also recognised by the HIA and was given the ANZ Housing Awards Display Home Winner award for 2008 in its category.
