Description

Located just 10 kilometers outside of Alice Springs, Yeperenye / Emily and Jessie Gaps Nature Park are one of the first noticeable features of the East MacDonnell Ranges.

This nature park is not only a natural wonder, but it also holds deep cultural significance for the Eastern Arrernte Aboriginal people.

The two small gaps in the Heavitree Range hold great spiritual significance for the Eastern Arrernte Aboriginal people. Emily Gap is a significant sacred site where the caterpillar beings of Mparntwe (Alice Springs) originated. According to their Dreamtime story, the caterpillars formed Emily Gap, which led to the creation of many of the topographic features around Alice Springs, then radiated out to the edge of the Simpson Desert. Additionally, Emily Gap features a large rock painting that depicts the caterpillar dreaming. A visit to the park provides an opportunity for visitors to learn about the rich history and cultural significance of the area.

Apart from its cultural significance, Yeperenye / Emily and Jessie Gaps Nature Park is also an excellent location to witness the natural beauty of the MacDonnell Ranges. There is a short walking track that will lead you through both gaps, giving you a chance to experience the unique beauty of both. While walking, you can spot local wildlife and observe the diverse plant life within the park.

It is believed that the first sighting of Emily and Jessie Gap by non-Aboriginal people was in 1871. It was earlier believed that the gaps were named after the daughters of Sir Charles Todd. Regardless, the history of the region adds an extra layer of intrigue
