Simpsons Gap

Simpsons Gap, also known as Rungutjirpa to the Arrernte people, is a sacred site located in the west of the West MacDonnell Ranges in the Northern Territory of Australia.

It is easily accessible, being only 18 kilometres west of Alice Springs, and attracts many visitors due to its stunning scenery and rich cultural history. The area is home to various plant species and wildlife, including the black-footed rock wallaby, making it a popular destination for nature lovers.

The history of Simpsons Gap dates back many years and holds significant spiritual importance for the Arrernte people. It was first documented by Gilbert Rotherdale McMinn in 1871 during his surveying of a route for the Overland Telegraph Line. McMinn's discovery increased the visitation and tourism to the area.

Simpsons Gap is also the starting point of Section 1 of the Larapinta Trail, a 223-kilometre long-distance walking trail around the West MacDonnell Ranges. The trail begins at the Telegraph Station in Alice Springs and ends at the waterhole at Simpsons Gap, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes and wildlife. It is a great opportunity for photographers and hikers to explore the rugged terrain. At the end of the trail, visitors can enjoy a refreshing dip in the permanent waterhole at Simpsons Gap.
