WA winners announced at the 2023 Wine Show of Australia

With an impressive 965 wines in the running, the National Wine Show of Australia has just announced the best in show for 2023. WA wineries winemakers did not disappoint, collecting several prestigious trophies and gold medals across several varieties from across the state. Wines were judged and awarded points out of a total score of 100.

Chardonnay Trophy

Deep Woods Estate 2021 Reserve Chardonnay - White Wine of Show - 97 Top Gold 

Established in 1987, Deep Woods has become one of the leading wine producers in the Margaret River Region. They are well renowned for their exceptional winemaking that combines traditional and modern techniques, and have become one of regions most awarded wineries.

Their full-bodied chardonnay has been described by judges as "beautifully concentrated" and "fabulously complex", with a citrus tang and crunchy juicy texture, including flavours of sliced apples and pears, grapefruit, guava, peach and lime, with smoky cedarwood, oak and matchstick notes. The nose is complex and reveals the mineral undertones of flint, sea shells and sea salt. The wine was awarded 97 points and crowned the best chardonnay and Best White Wine of the show, taking home the Len Evans Memorial White Wine of Show Trophy.

Sauvignon Blanc Trophy

Deep Woods Estate 2022 Sauvignon Blanc - 97 Top Gold 

This Sauvignon Blanc was tank fermented to highlight fruity aromatics and is bursting with zesty lime, tropical fruit and freshly cut grass aromas. Expect to taste pristine acidity with flavours of lime curd, grapefruit, passionfruit and a herbaceous finish. A small proportion of this wine was barrel fermented to add texture and complexity while maintaining a light, zesty and dry finish.

Cabernet Trophy

Xanadu 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon - 96 Top Gold 

Xanadu was established in 1968 in Wallcliffe in the Margaret River region, taking up an idyllic 65 hectares of vine and boasting a state-of-the-art restaurant and cellar door. The Rathbone family acquired Xanadu in 2005, with Glenn Goodall stepping into the role of Senior Winemaker, who was recently awarded the 2023 Halliday Wine Companion Winemaker of the Year Award.

The fruit for this wine was sourced from Wilyabrup, Treeton and Steven's Road vineyards and matured for 14 months in French Oak. It is a beautifully structured wine with aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and plum, with ripe tannins and persistent notes of oak, vanilla and eucalyptus. This wine stands out with earthy, savoury hints of leather and exciting multi-layers of flavours and textures.
