An inner-city 1950s worker’s cottage was transformed into an urban oasis, thanks to Öopenspace’s styling of an extension finished in raw concrete and light-filled double-volume spaces that harmonise the old and new.
Designed by Ferguson Architects, this extension alludes to a play of simple volumes juxtaposed with tapering skylights and an open floorplan. The layout cleverly expands in the centre, bringing airiness and light to what would be the darkest area of the house. This imbues the space with an introspective dimension, like that of an art gallery, making one look inward, yet upwards to the skylight.
Paying homage to the original front of the house, the styling objective was to breathe new life into the space while capturing the essence of the old. A careful selection of mid-century inspired furniture captures this specific moment in time, with a raw modern industrial look in the extension.
In the front bedroom of the vintage portion of the home, a fern green and blush palette adds modernity and brightness, the plush Cas-Ret armchair giving a dash of subtle colour. The Bowie bedroom collection, in American walnut with fabric-upholstered bedhead, organic chamfered corners and tapered legs, alludes to a mid-century era.
Part of the old building fabric, the family room has a subdued palette of grays and whites. Commune's monochromatic painting is the focal point, with the gray Cas-Ret three-seater and Weiland coffee table muting the space to emphasise the artwork.
The Tusk minimalist product range was selected to complement the raw industrial feel of the extension. The plush Kardell sofa in black leather softens the space with its organic forms, and is paired with a B&O A9 free-standing wireless speaker that shares the same black and American walnut tones.
