Konstantin Shamray with ANAM Orchestra & Sophie Rowell

The beauty and emotional intensity of Russian music lies at the heart of this deeply moving program, brought to life by pianist Konstantin Shamray and the ANAM Orchestra led by Sophie Rowell.

  • Dates:Jun 30
  • Time(s):7.30pm
  • Venue:Perth Concert Hall

Details

  • Hosted By:Musica Viva
  • Music:Classical
  • Produced By:Musica Viva
  • Event Venue:Perth Concert Hall

Description

As a 15-year-old student nearing the end of his first year at the Vienna Conservatory, Gustav Mahler composed one movement of a piano quartet, a work that always gives the impression that something bigger is struggling to emerge. Following Mahler’s own tradition of enlarging certain chamber pieces, this program includes an orchestration of the quartet, made by the outstanding violinist Harry Ward: an ANAM alumnus and a Musica Viva FutureMaker.

Alfred Schnittke was keenly aware of his Soviet/German musical heritage, even as he stomped on it in heavy boots. Yet his piano concerto is a touching affirmation of his artistic roots, and his affection for Tchaikovsky makes the two Russians good bedfellows, the elder’s Serenade here prefaced by Estonian composer Mihkel Kerem’s Lamento, a work of searing beauty.

ANAM’s ensemble of wonderful young string players is directed with equal verve by the terrific Sophie Rowell, one of Australia’s most admired instrumentalists. They are joined onstage by Adelaide’s brilliant, Russian-trained Konstantin Shamray.

Four Stars – Sydney Morning Herald
The audience rewarded their performance with several curtain calls, accentuated by the kind of whooping one might expect at a rock concert. City News
Four and ½ Stars…. the future of Australia’s classical music is in safe hands ….a finely judged and memorable performance of Tchaikovsky’s crowd-pleaser, Serenade for Strings in C major, to put the seal on a concert from the top shelf. - Limelight

Description

Slipping through time and genres, York unveils the pasts we invent and the pasts we fail to acknowledge. Inspired by 200 years of real accounts, this daring new work sheds light on how our stories are told – and who tells them. Neighbour, I’ve been having trouble sleeping. Perhaps it’s that we haven’t been here very long but… do you hear it? There’s a pulse. A voice. Underneath and around. I’ve stripped back the wall paper and lifted the carpet. I’ve pulled up the floorboards and stand with a sledgehammer above the foundations. The tension is climbing up the walls and through the beams. There’s something unsettled here. Something needing to be heard.
