It’s a serious competition with big cash prizes and the chance to watch local cowboys try to ride the longest 8 seconds of their life on the spectacular saddle bronc, bull and bullock rides.

If you have never been to a rodeo, it is truly an amazing experience full of, as they say, ‘Big bulls, big cash prizes and big falls’! It’s a contest of awesome skill and bravery dating back to the 1800s and attracts competitors from all over the Kimberley and Northern Territory.

It’s also a wonderful glimpse into the lifestyle and characters that live in the Kimberley and many of the attendees are from the region, so it’s a great chance to meet and mingle with the locals, who are relaxed and having fun and generally in very good form.

It’s a great day for adults and families and in addition to the bull rides, there are more than 20 events including the spectacular saddle bronc, barrel racing and more. For kids, there is a barrel race event and also a poddy ride.

Join us on Saturday 23 May.

Gates open 3.30pm and the night ends at midnight. The final nail-biting event is typically around 9.30pm and then the band kicks in til midnight.

Food & Drink
There is a fully licensed bar, live entertainment and various food outlets – no BYO alcohol is allowed.

Getting There
Located at the base of Sleeping Buddha, the setting is spectacular at the Kununurra Rodeo Grounds just 5km out of town. *** Nominated in 3 categories at the recent 2019 Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) Awards, including Best Film, Best Lead Actress and Best Original Music Score.

Directed by acclaimed Golden Globe winning actress Rachel Griffiths and featuring an all-star Aussie cast, RIDE LIKE A GIRL is the incredible true story of Michelle Payne, the first female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup.

As a little girl, Michelle Payne (Palmer) dreams of the impossible: winning horseracing's toughest two-mile race. The youngest of 10 children, Michelle is raised by single father Paddy (Neill). She leaves school at 15 to become a jockey and after early failures she finds her feet, but a family tragedy, followed by her own near fatal horse fall all almost ends the dream.

Against all the medical advice, and the protests of her siblings, she rides on and meets the Prince of Penzance. Together they overcome impossible odds for a shot at the dream: a ride in the 2015 Melbourne Cup, at odds of 100 to 1. The rest is history.

Special guest performance by Triple J Unearthed artist, Josh Lee Hamilton.

Josh Lee Hamilton is an indie folk/ singer songwriter from the small and vibrant surf town of Byron Bay NSW. Growing up on the northern rivers and travelling abroad inspired his uniquely smooth and captivating sound.

Josh has performed around the country, at festivals such as Splendour In The Grass, and alongside accomplished artists such as Caravana Sun and Garrett Kato. All his singles have been released on Triple J.

Recently he won both Song Writer of The Year and Best Alternative/Indie Song at the NCEIA Dolphin Awards, earning him studio time at Pete Murray’s Iron Kick’s Studio with studio engineer Paul Pilsneniks (think Angus and Julia Stone, The Whitlams and Silverchair).

Josh is known for his easy listening sound and stylistic melodies. His songwriting weaves a clever lyrical thread and sound that expresses the big and small, the shallow and deep, head and heart, soul and spirit, you and me.

Part proceeds will once again be donated to the Cottesloe Coastcare Association, as well as North Cottesloe Primary School.

Written by Stan Grant, THE AUSTRALIAN DREAM tells the remarkable and inspirational story of AFL legend Adam Goodes.

Genre: Documentary
Directed by: Daniel Gordon
Cast: Adam Goodes, Stan Grant, Nova Peris, Nicky Winmar, Paul Roos, John Longmire, Nathan Buckley, Eddie McGuire and Andrew Bolt
Runtime: 105 mins
Country of Origin: Australia
Language: English
Trailer: https://youtu.be/zRJkLgl56jk

From shy country kid to two-time Brownlow medallist and Australian of the Year, Goodes is an inspiration to many. The footy field was where he thrived; the only place where the colour of his skin was irrelevant. Goodes’ world fell apart when he became the target of racial abuse during a game, which spiralled into public backlash against him. He spoke out about racism when Australia was not ready to hear the ugly truth, retiring quietly from AFL heartbroken.

THE AUSTRALIAN DREAM is a deeply personal and comprehensive exploration of Goodes’ own journey which saw him retreat from everyday life only to return determined to rise above the ugliness he had been forced to confront.

The Australian Dream is something people reach for and many people obtain, but there’s an emptiness at the heart of it because Australia has not resolved the questions of its history. If the Australian Dream is rooted in racism, what can be done to redefine it for the next generation?

Wings for Life World Run

Run, walk or skip for those who can't at the Wings for Life World Run in Perth. Join 200,000 runners from across the world in support of spinal cord research and take on the worlds most unique race.

  • Dates:May 3
  • Venue:Perth CBD

  • Hosted By:Wings for Life World Run
  • Venue Address:Perth CBD
  • Type:Charity / Fundraising,Sports
  • Audience:Adults,Family-Friendly
  • Sports:Running

On Sunday 3 May 2020 at 6pm AWST, it is estimated over 200,000 runners from across the world will take on the race with no finish line in support of spinal cord research. Back in its sixth year, Wings for Life World Run will hold official events in seven Australian locations, including the flagship event which has moved to Perth and organised app runs in Melbourne, Sydney, Manly, Newcastle, Adelaide, and Brisbane. If none of these locations suit, runners can join via the mobile app no matter where they are.

Competitors from around the globe will once again run at the exact same time, regardless of their location, meaning some competitors will run at sunset, some will run at sunrise while others, like Australia, will run into the night.

Unlike a traditional race, the Wings for Life World Run finish line is mobile and behind the participants. The iconic Catcher Car starts its engine 30 minutes after the run begins, chasing down the runners one by one until the very last remains. Whether participants are looking to spend a fun evening with friends or aiming to achieve high performance, the thrill of trying to stay ahead of the Catcher Car often motivates them to achieve more than they imagined.

The run is the primary fundraiser for the Wings for Life Spinal Cord Research Foundation, and 100% of entry fees and donations go directly to important spinal cord research projects. With 211 research projects funded to date (63 ongoing in 2019 alone, including 3 right here in Australia), real progress is already happening to help the millions of people around the world living with spinal cord injury.

Registration for the Wings for Life World Run is easy, and options are flexible. Some will participate shoulder-to-shoulder with thousands at Perth’s Flagship Run, where they'll be pursued by a real Catcher Car as they run around the city’s landmarks. Others will register for an App Run to be chased by a virtual Catcher Car wherever they are.

The run is livestreamed worldwide, and the vibe is purely positive - groups in creative costumes, inspiring stories of overcoming obstacles and surprises like marriage proposals add to the joy. The 2019 edition included participants of 186 nationalities. Across 323 locations they collectively covered 1.1 million km and raised over $5.6 million AUD for research toward a cure.

There's no better time to sign up for the Wings for Life World Run 2020. To find out more and register for the race visit: www.wingsforlifeworldrun.com

  • Type:Sports
  • Audience:Adults
  • Sports:Cycling

The 125km route features ten categorised climbs, with over 3000 metres of elevation gain. The scenery along the way is more typical of North American landscapes than how people typically imagine Australia to be. The route has been designed to be difficult, completion of all seven sectors will represent victory, SEVEN will redefine your limits, and succeed or fail, it will be an experience that you will remember forever.

With 237 competitors in 2018, 550 in 2019 and over 800 expected in 2020, SEVEN is fast becoming one of the most popular off-road events on the WA cycling calendar.

The course starts and finishes in the picturesque township of Nannup, approximately 40 minutes drive from the major regional centres of Busselton, Bridgetown and Margaret River. The Melo Velo Cafe and Bike Shop is our event village host, and their delightful grounds along Brockman Street provide the perfect starting point for your SEVEN adventure. The route winds its way around the golden triangle of cycling in WA that is formed by connecting the townships of Nannup, Bridgetown and Donnybrook. This area is estimated to be around 30,000 acres and have in excess of 1000km of rideable roads and trails.

Thanks to the unique topography of the valley and peaks between Nannup and Balingup, the ten major climbs of SEVEN are amongst the best that the State has to offer. These climbs range in length from 1.2km to 4.5km long with gradients frequently touching on 20%. Our advice is to not use too much energy too early. The primary climbs of Brockman Farm, The Crucible, Kinky, Arcadia, and Chainsaw Ridge are in particular challenging to tired legs.

The route has only 2.6kms of single track at the finish and virtually no fire trails. All the roads used in SEVEN are unpaved and well-formed with a mix of dirt, gravel, hard-packed clay, quartz grit and mica. They wind, climb, switchback and descend through pine plantations, state forest and farms. The best way we can describe the roads of SEVEN is “parallel single track”. They are exciting, challenging and magnificent to ride.

SEVEN is open to riders of all abilities, however a medium to high level of fitness will be required to complete all seven sectors in the allotted ten hours. The event is not suitable for road bikes. For riders from non MTB backgrounds we strongly recommend the use of caution on descents, as for every epic climb in the event there is a corresponding downhill.

Enter with the intent to try and ride all seven sectors (SEVEN) or choose from an 85km/1700m option that takes in five sectors (FIVE) or a 50km/1100m option that takes in three sectors (THREE). There is also an option for people to sign up to be a part of our crew if you would like to be a part of the event, but don’t feel that you are up to riding.

Rider registration is from 4pm to 7pm on the Friday before the event at the Melo Velo Event Village along Brockman Street, Nannup. A rider briefing will be held immediately after from 7pm to 7:30pm. We ask that all riders make the effort to register on Friday evening and attend the rider briefing.

The race starts on Brockman Street in Nannup at 7am sharp. We ask that all riders be on the start line by 6:45am for the pre-race briefing at 6:50am. All riders must be officially registered to start. Those who cannot make registration on Friday are asked to be at the registration desk at 6am on Saturday to collect race packs.
