Description

Cullen Wines was established by Diana and Kevin Cullen who began experimenting with viticulture in 1966 following various research reports that suggested Margaret River’s climate was similar to that of Bordeaux. Encouraging results led the pair to plant 18 acres of vines on their sheep and cattle farm in 1971 to establish Cullen Wines. Daughter Vanya became chief winemaker in 1989 and has earnt a reputation as one of Australia’s most awarded winemakers.

In 2005, the iconic Diana Madeline Cabernet Merlot was awarded the top Langton’s Classification category of ‘Exceptional’, one of a handful of Australia’s best wines to hold this status. The Kevin John Chardonnay 2007 was awarded the World’s Best Chardonnay at the 2010 Decanter World Wine Awards. Both wines have received a host of international awards, judged against the world’s best wines.

The Wines

The wines are estate-grown from Cullen Wines’ two A Grade Biodynamic (BFA) certified vineyards in Wilyabrup, Margaret River. The philosophy is to search for the best quality expression of the vineyard in the wine. Quality is paramount, and every winemaking step reflects Cullen Wines’ approach to do whatever it takes to make the most outstanding wines. Cabernet Sauvignon (and blends) and Chardonnay are the focus.

Wine Tasting

Cullen Wine’s harmonious stone and timber cellar door is open daily 10.30am to 4pm and offers complimentary tastings of current release wines. A selection of museum vintages can be purchased by the glass from the cellar door’s enomatic wine machine. Enthusiasts will love Cullen Wines tour, which teaches the principles of biodynamics in the vineyards and includes a visit to the historic vines and winery followed by a private wine tasting.

The Food

The award-winning Cullen restaurant overlooks their historic vineyard making a relaxing place for a glass of wine, lunch or a coffee. The menu incorporates only fresh, biodynamic and organic produce sourced from Cullen’s restaurant garden and selected local producers. For an extra treat, try Cullen’s Food & Wine experience, a five-course feast paired with wines.

Unique Highlights

The Cullen Wines homestead is set in peaceful vineyard surroundings for a rejuvenating getaway that supports the winery’s philosophy of living in harmony with nature. It was built in 1976 and is conveniently located within a short walking distance of the Cullen Wines’ tasting room and restaurant. Cullen Wines’ Biodynamic Spiral Garden is a unique self-guided tour experience that brings to life the fascinating biodynamic process employed throughout operations at Cullen.

Domaine Naturaliste

After nearly three decades working closely with producers in Margaret River, Western Australia, renowned winemaker Bruce Dukes launched Domaine Naturaliste – his own range of highly acclaimed wines. An homage to the region where he honed his craft, Domaine Naturaliste is a space for Bruce to demonstrate his mastery of the classic Margaret River varietals.

Description

Bruce Dukes is a long-time local winemaker with a great reputation. For many years he led the winemaking team at Pierro in Margaret River, and says a lengthy stint at Niebaum-Coppola in the Napa Valley gave him great confidence in his philosophies. An Agronomist, Bruce approaches winemaking from an agricultural point of view, focussing immensely on soil health and sustainable farming, which he believes reaps the best rewards for the wine and the environment.

The Wines
Domaine Naturaliste makes three ranges of wine from classic Margaret River varietals to showcase his artisanal approach. The range names are the Discovery Series, Direction Series and Flagship Series. His Artus Chardonnay and Morus Cabernet Sauvignon were major winners at the 2018 International Wine Challenge in London, each receiving the trophies for Best Margaret River Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Wine Tasting
Domaine Naturaliste now has it's own estate in Wilyabrup with a 21 Ha vineyard and a picturesque Cellar Door (formerly Knee Deep Wines). Open from 10am - 5pm daily, visitors can relax in the vineyard setting with seated wine flights of Domaine Naturaliste wines accompanied by charcuterie or cheese.

The Wines

Chief winemaker Clive Otto applies traditional process and modern wine-making skills in our purpose-built winery to capture and express the unique qualities of the vines, Wilyabrup terroir and nuances of the property as a whole. Our grapes, sourced solely from our single vineyard are wild-fermented and made gently with a hands-off, minimal intervention approach to create intensely flavoured, textured and complex wines providing a true expression of the here-and-now, evolving with the vagaries of nature.

Rustico at Hay Shed Hill restaurant offers world class tapas, hospitality, shared plate, Mediterranean style fare. Description

Rosily Vineyard is a boutique single vineyard winery making a certified organic range of all Margaret River’s regional hero varieties. All wines are estate grown and made. Often referred to as a quiet achiever in Margaret River, Rosily Vineyard was awarded ‘Most Outstanding New Winery’ by the West Australian wine industry in 2003 and has received a cabinet-full of trophies and medals since.

Wine Tasting

One of the most authentic tasting experiences in Margaret River that may be better referred to as a “winery door” than a “cellar door,” Rosily welcomes visitors on weekends and during the Summer holidays to its tasting space, located within their working winery.

Unique Highlights

In 2017 the winery debuted its first sulphite-free wine, a Semillon Sauvignon Blanc blend.

Snake & Herring views Western Australia’s South-West wine regions like a treasure map with vineyard jewels scattered throughout. The Wines

Snake & Herring is known for its exciting and eclectic wine range that loves celebrating overlooked styles and regions. The delicious and memorable hand-picked wines focus on natural fermentation and minimal additions to be unique and site-expressive. There is a kaleidoscope of styles including various Great Southern Rieslings, Pinot Noirs and a Grenache Rose, and a mix of Margaret River Sauvignon Blanc Semillon, Chardonnay and Cabernet blends. 

Cellar Door

A simple, laidback, unpretentious space to enjoy some remarkable wine, the cellar door is located on Caves Road, about 15 minutes’ drive north of Margaret River town. Wine tastings are available daily from 11am to 5pm. (11am to 4pm during Winter.)

The Food

Snake & Herring’s Yarri Restaurant has fast-become a hotspot dining in the south-west dining. It is located in Dunsborough and headed by one of WA’s most highly awarded chefs, Aaron Carr. The menu features only local produce and is inspired by the six seasons of the Noongar people and country, with all ingredients sourced sustainably and thoughtfully.

Description

Thompson Estate is a small winery with a big reputation for its excellent Cabernet Sauvignons and Chardonnays, as recognised with its 5 Red Star Halliday Rating.

Vineyard planting began in 1997 and after a few years making the wines at specialist facilities in Margaret River, a state-of-the-art winery was built at Thompson Estate. The highly awarded range has received a large number of wine show medals and consistent critical acclaim as some of the region’s most esteemed wines.

The Wines

There are three wine ranges: The Specialist, made from the best Cabernet and Chardonnay grown within the estate vineyard; an Estate range representing Margaret River hero varieties; and the Four Chambers range which celebrates the joy of making wine with creativity at its core.

Description

In 1976 school teachers Kevin and Marian Squance planted a tiny vineyard with Verdehlo, Semillon, Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon. Over forty years on, and with two vineyards, 25 hectares of vines and a new generation of the family running the show, this quaint little winery has become one of Margaret River’s most prestigious, boutique producers.

The Willespie vineyard sites were selected for their French-like qualities; particularly their layered, well-draining gravel soils which are perfect for premium viticulture. The name Willespie, blends the region Wilyabrup and the French word espérer meaning ‘to hope’.

The Wines

The varietal wines are made with modern viticultural practices and minimal winemaking intervention. In addition to their ‘Old School Chardonnay and Semillon’, the range includes all the regional classics; Semillon Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet and Shiraz. Sweeter palates will love trying the rare Verdelho.

Cellar Door

Nestled amongst the picturesque setting of expansive vineyards, rolling hills and natural bushland, the cellar door is built from stone and timber sourced from the property. Wine tastings are available 10.30am to 5pm daily, except Wednesdays.

Description

Established in 1973 by David and Heather Watson on Caves Road in Wilyabrup, Woodlands Wines was one of the first five vineyards to be planted in Margaret River. David and Heather’s aim was to create wines emulating the great vineyards of Bordeaux.

Early success ensued when their 1981 ‘Andrew’ Cabernet Sauvignon won trophies for ‘Best Red Wine’ at the Perth Wine Show, the Mt Barker Wine Show, and the National Wine Show. It was the first from Margaret River to achieve a National Red Wine Trophy. The second generation of the family now has the reins, with Stuart becoming winemaker in 2002 and brother Andrew joining the business full time in 2005.

Woodlands Wines has received significant critical acclaim at wine shows around the world and holds a prestigious Langton’s Classification of ‘Outstanding’ for its Cabernet Sauvignon and is one of James Halliday’s highest rated Margaret River wineries.

The Wines

Woodlands primary focus is on its red wines, specifically Cabernet Sauvignon and a selection of Bordeaux blends. A Chardonnay is made too. The vineyard is dry grown and maintained with traditional and organic methods. In the winery, Woodlands wines spend up to two years in fine French oak and minimal winemaker intervention.

Cellar Door

Current release wines can be tasted at the cellar door daily from 10am to 5pm. No reservations are required.
