Amato Vino are small-batch artisan winemakers based in the Margaret River wine region, Western Australia.


The winemaking philosophy is ‘lo-fi’, in that we embrace wild-ferments, minimal adjustments in the winery, gentle handling. Wines are typically unfined and unfiltered. We are hands-on in terms of the grunt work, the care and guidance, but with a hands off approach to the science of winemaking, using little or no inputs and employing traditional processes. An old-school approach yet with a modern flare for creativity and adventure.


Established in 2003 by owner/winemaker Brad Wehr, the labels and wine styles have continued to grow, covering traditional Margaret River varietals through to some eclectic and unusual grape varieties and winemaking methods.


Our winery is located a few minutes south-west of the Margaret River township. We work with a core group of independent growers who share our philosophy, employing organic and sustainable farming practices.


Our wines

AMATO VINO ‘wilds’

 The ‘wilds’ are home to our emerging Mediterranean varieties, micro-batches, skinsy ferments and other eclectic wines. Featuring single vineyards, hand-picks, natural ferments – and incorporating minimal winemaking input and unconventional vessels for fermentation/maturation – this is the wild stuff.


Packaged under labels bearing in-house artworks/designs/photography the ‘wilds’ include Teroldego, Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, Primitivo, Marsanne, Trousseau, Savagnin.


AMATO VINO ‘mantra’

The ‘mantra’ series is all about the classic Margies grape varieties, albeit with the Amato Vino lo-fi twist. The emphasis is on vineyard site & fruit purity, working with small fruit parcels to bring out the best from the each site. Wild ferments (open and barrel), no adds, no fining and filtration are all central to the mix.


Wines include a Barrel-aged Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon.



‘Fusa’… the home for our blends (foo-za). Utilising emerging/alternative varieties as the basis for the blends we’re seeking to create juicy, fresh drinkability, yet complex and alluring wines – packed with flavour but oh-so light on their feet. The Bianco and Rosso are fruit-forward, fleshy and flavoursome versions of some of our favourite grape 

varieties and are made for short to mid-term drinking.

Owner Mickele Amonini's family has a rich winemaking history within the Valtellina region, near the Swiss-Italian border in northern Italy. Continuing this tradition in Australia, Michele and partner Karen Turner purchased a vineyard with vines dating back to 1945 to create their boutique, award-winning Ambrook winery within the rich soils of the Swan River in West Swan.

The Wines

Italian wines are the focus, with dry to sweet styles including Verdehlo and Moscato (made from vines planted in 1945). The medium to full bodied reds include a Grenache blend, Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Porto Di Pia (dessert wine) is a wild-fermented fortified white made in an Italian Vin Santo style. All wines are available for purchase at the Ambrook cellar door or online.

Cellar Door

The estate houses a rustic cellar door with an inviting, laidback approach to wine-tasting. Be sure to enjoy a range of Italian favourites; including antipasto, cheeses and arancini balls, best enjoyed overlooking the beautiful vista of vines. Open Thursday to Monday 10am - 5pm.

Barrecas Wines

Located in country town Donnybrook, 40km South East of Bunbury, Barreca’s is family owned and operated, offering varieties of Shiraz, Barbera, Malbec, Zinfandel and Sangiovese.

After a work trip to his family's homeland of Italy in the early 1990s Fil Barreca, aged just 21, discovered his intrinsic connection to working in a vineyard and growing grapes on a highly innovative Sicilian winery. He took inspiration and passion back to Donnybrook and begun planting vines immediately establishing the winery in 1994.

With 46 hectares under vine the predominant varieties include Shiraz, cult favourite Barbera, Shiraz Malbec, Zinfandel, Sangiovese and many more.

The sparkling and fortified wines are proudly 100% estate bottled, including the Estate’s premium Extra Virgin Olive Oil which is produced from the Estates premium olive plantation.

Flying Fish Cove is a producer of premium quality, great value, passionate wines, located 25km north of Margaret River township, along the renowned Caves road in the Wilyabrup sub-regional area. In addition to an approachable range of Margaret River varietal wines, look out for a sparkling range with a Pinot Noir Chardonnay (white) and a sparkling Shiraz (red). Garbin Estate Wines

Established in 1956, this charming family-run winery and cellar door produces boutique reds, whites and rich fortifieds, but their speciality is bottle-fermented “methode traditionelle” sparkling.

The family-owned wineries of the Swan Valley often include a fascinating history and personal flavour, and Garbin is no exception. Winemaker Peter Garbin (son of founder Duje Garbin), wife Katrina and sons Joel and Adam have a philosophy of hands-on premium winemaking coupled with personal service.

Their wines include award-winning premium boutique red and white wines as well as rich, traditional fortified styles for which the Swan Valley is well renowned, some of which are only available at the cellar door. Their speciality is bottle-fermented “methode traditionelle” sparkling styles made from chardonnay and, more unusually, semillon, chenin blanc, shiraz and merlot. The fruit is sourced from estate vineyards in Gingin and the Swan Valley and grown with low chemical inputs and no pesticides.

The cellar door is low key, charming and spacious with a lovely outside area for warmer days and open 11am to 5:30pm 7 days a week.


Duje Garbin, founder of Garbin Estate, learnt his winemaking craft in between fishing on a small island in the Adriatic Sea. It was basic stuff, but ideally suited to the family needs. As a migrant to Western Australia in 1937, he saved his money and purchased a property at Millendon in the Swan Valley, then Middle Swan in 1956. The Garbin business was built up on bulk wine, some 2000-3000 gallons a year, delivered around the suburbs or purchased by customers visiting the property. Upon retiring Duje’s son, Peter, took over Garbin Estate Wines (GEW). Over the last 20 years, GEW has undergone a massive transition including a new cellar door and processing area, upgraded major plant and equipment and established a vineyard in Gingin, 90 minutes from Perth CBD.

Happs Wines and Commonage Pottery

Established in 1978, Happs is a Margaret River wine pioneer, offering the region’s largest selection of wines in complex of mud-brick buildings including a working pottery in a garden setting.

Happs has welcomed visitors to their rustic cellar door for over 35 years. There is a wine for every palate including those allergic to preservatives. Many visitors review us on Trip Advisor. The 4.5 star rating puts the winery in the top 10% globally.

The Wines
The wines are produced entirely in house from estate-grown fruit from the Quindalup and the larger Karridale vineyard known as Three Hills. The Three Hills property is associated with later ripening, fuller flavour, elegance and finesse. The wine range includes sweet, dry, preservative free, fortified, and sparkling wines.

Wine Tasting
The rustic cellar door was built in the 1970s and is constructed of handmade mud-bricks. Look closely to see builders’ finger marks on the walls, capturing, “the essence of old school Margaret River". It's warm and inviting. Cellar door staff offer a friendly, educated approach to explain the extensive portfolio of wines.

Culinary Experiences
Take a basket and select from a range of gourmet cheese, meats, pickled vegetables and preserves from more than 15 local producers, pair with some Happs Wine and indulge! Picnic on the lawn, at the outside tables, or inside if it’s a rainy day.

The Commonage Pottery 
Happs Pottery began in Vasse in the early 1970s. The current workshop and gallery was built in 1978. See artists at work in the act of creation. A wide range of handicrafts and jewellery from local artisans is available.

Formerly Hotham Valley Estate, the vineyard was planted in 1988. Current owners Leonard Bruin and Wouter Denig converted the operation to follow strict organic and biodynamic practices in 2002. Situated at an altitude of 350 metres, the vineyards enjoy ideal growing conditions of hot summers and cool winters, evident in the wines which combine elegance, structure and vibrant fruit characters.

Hotham Ridge has won over 30 different medals and 11 trophies from various Australian wine shows since 2003.

The Wines

Varieties include Chenin Blanc, Semillon, Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Shiraz, Tempranillo, Verdelho and Zinfandel. A Mistelle white port or Shiraz port are also available in winter.

Cellar Door

Open from Friday-Sunday 11am-3pm, the rustic cellar door offers a stunning environment to discover the wines and learn about organic and biodynamic winemaking principles.

Unique Highlights

Check out the large rammed-earth barrel room that has been transformed into an art gallery with an industrial style. Ten different exhibitions are shown each year. Two self catered cottages are available in the Hotham Ridge property too.

Originally an orchard for stone fruit, pears and apples, the La Fattoria vineyard was established in 2012 by the Radice family with the planting of 11 Italian varieties. By nature of their native climates, Italian varieties are well suited to Australia's warm and dry grape-growing conditions, like those of the Perth Hills.

The Wines

La Fattoria is home to one of WA’s widest Italian wine ranges,  with varieties including Barbera, Sparkling Vermentino, Fiano, Sangiovese, Vermentino, Biancone, Sparkling Brachetto, Nebbiolo, Sparkling Pignoletto, Primitivo and Sagrantino.

Cellar Door

In Italy, wine is typically served with food during family gatherings. With this philosophy in mind, the La Fattoria cellar door showcases its wines as wine flights, available with or without traditional antipasto, and always accompanied by a friendly chat with the winery's 'family'. 'Conversation with Italy' wine flights are $10 per person and include piccolo antipasto and tastings of five wines.

The Food

Enjoy lunch just like Nonna makes it at the estate's cosy trattoria, featuring a set menu of delectable Italian dishes designed to be shared among loved ones. The culinary experience includes a wine tasting and a rustic Italian menu created from locally-sourced, seasonal produce. Alternatively, select a range of antipasto items with La Fattoria’s 'pick your own platter' or homemade coffee and cake. Open Thursday to Sunday 11:30am to 4pm.

Montefalcon Vineyard

A boutique vineyard making traditional, hand-picked, preservative-free wines from organically-grown grapes, that pays homage to its Umbrian heritage through a focus on Italian varieties.

Located in the Porongurup wine region, just east of Mount Barker, the Montefalcon vineyard is inspired by the winemaking abilities of Baldo Lucaroni of Umbria, Italy. The name Montefalco comes from a town in Umbria, where the beautiful indigenous grape variety Sagrantino originated.

The grapes are grown with sustainable and traditional farming practices following bio-dynamic principles of feeding and enriching the soil, not the vine. Totalling approximately 6 acres, the vineyard is experiences ideal conditions to grow ripe, well-balanced grapes.

Italian varieties are the focus, specifically Nebbiolo and Sangiovese. Cabernet Franc is made too. Wines can be purchased online or from various stockists throughout WA. No cellar door.


RiverBank Estate Winery

Situated on the banks of the Swan, delight in the stunning natural setting and manicured lawns, multi award-winning wines and superb a la carte restaurant, winner of several gold-plate awards.

First planted on the fertile banks of the Swan River in 1988, the vineyard of this stunning property has grown to encompass nearly thirty acres of mature, low yielding vines, producing exceptional fruit that is lovingly handcrafted into premium, regional, varietal wines, vinified and bottled on-site.


The Cellar Door, open 10am - 4pm daily, should be your first stop, offering a large range of reds, whites and rosé wines for tasting. In total, 17 varieties of grapes are grown at Riverbank Estate, including 5 white varieties; Verdelho, Chenin Blanc, Semillon, Chardonnay and Vermentino; and 12 red varities including; Tempranillo, Malbec, Grenache, Zinfandel, Sangiovese, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Pinot Noir, Nero D’Avola and Mataro.


Take the time to enjoy a superb lunch at the restaurant, winner of several gold plate awards. Architecturally designed and rustic in style with wide verandahs and large expanses of manicured lawns provide plenty of space to slow down and unwind while taking in the beautiful vineyard and stunning surrounds. The menu changes regularly to incorporate the best seasonal foods and where possible, local, organically grown produce.


Riverbank holds a range of public events, all listed on their website.

The estate is also popular for weddings and events, with a dedicated coordinator able to arrange stunning events at the restaurant, on the lawns or even a marquee for hire, all of which enjoy 180 degree, panoramic views towards the Swan River and the historical landmark of Woodbridge House.

Tastings are available daily between 10am and 4pm. 
Our Restaurant is open between 11:30am and 3pm, and is also open on Sundays for breakfast from 7:30am to 10:30am.

Settlers Ridge makes a comprehensive range of 100% certified organic wines. In addition, the wines are vegetarian (many are vegan friendly), asthma and allergy friendly and virtually preservative free. The small family-owned vineyard was planted in 1994 and over the years has won numerous awards in mainstream wine shows, dispelling any perceptions that quality may be compromised with organic methods.

The beautiful property has a lovely undulating landscape with a large area of Marri and Jarrah forest and heavy, gravel loam soils, perfect for viticulture. The wine range includes a Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin, Cabernet Sauvignon and Tawny.

Stella Bella began in 1996 from a fusion of two of the region’s great wine minds, Stuart Pym and Janice McDonald.  With the aim to craft wines that would rival Australia’s best, in 1999 the first 200 cases of barrel-aged Semillon Sauvignon Blanc were highly successful and the winery has flourished ever since. These days winemaking is headed by Luke Joliffe, and viticulture by Steve Martin.

Stella Bella crafts wine under five labels from its four vineyards located throughout southern Margaret River. The south of the region is known for its longer, cooler ripening period, producing wines with higher natural acidity, delicate precision and femininity, reminiscent of a “cool climate” wine style.

The Wines
Stella Bella first shot to fame with its Suckfizzle, a Bordeaux-inspired Semillon Sauvignon Blanc blend. In addition to making Margaret River’s usual suspects, the winery pushes new frontiers with its sangiovese rosé, a small-batch pinot gris and sweet moscato. The wines are made in small batches enabling the winemakers enhance the best characteristics of each fruit parcel to make unique, quality wines.

Stella Bella operates from a charming little cellar door on Rosa Brook Road just minutes from Margaret River town. Our friendly and knowledgeable team welcome you to taste through our portfolio of wines, while learning about Stella Bella and the beautiful Margaret River Region. Visitors can also enjoy wine by the glass and BYO picnic options. Group tastings can be arranged in advance.

Dogs are welcome at the estate grounds but must be kept on a lead for their own safety.

Herbalist and botanist team, Bree and Paul Hoffman have a love for nature and strive to maintain biocultural diversity at their boutique winery, while still producing a variety of one-of-a-kind wines.

Their mission to preserve the historical character of the estate and local vineyards and to support local growers who practice organic viticulture, to protect, preserve, respect and resist trends, whilst still producing incredible tasting wines and bringing together the local community.

Passionate about maintaining biocultural diversity of the valley, all wines produced are fermented with indigenous yeasts and do not contain enzymes or other chemical additions. Paul’s interest in the integration of agricultural and natural systems is reflected in their wines.

They vines are dry-grown and carefully tended by hand to produce tiny yields of intensely flavoured fruit. Several wines are made from chenin blanc and grenache, which Paul believes are the region’s greatest varieties. Alternative varieties are produced using grapes sourced from like-minded growers in the region, including: greco bianco, malvasia, aleatico, tannat, mourvedré and tempranillo, some of which are poured in Perth’s best wine bars.
