Description

A unique winery was established in 1992 with the lofty vision to create a range of ports and liqueurs made from the best local fruit growing in nearby orchards. This one-of-a-kind wine range has received awards at the Perth Royal Show awards every year since Birdwood Park opened its cellar door, and gained recognition from the National Australian Fruit Wine Awards in 2017.

The wines include a signature Cherry Port, as well as a range of liqueurs flavoured with Granny Smith apples, apricots, oranges, plums and more.  

Cellar Door

Set inside a quaint packing shed, the cellar door at Birdwood Park is open from Friday to Sunday from 11am-3pm on Balingup's main street, and on Friday evenings for the Balingup Night Markets.

Barrecas Wines

Description

After a work trip to his family's homeland of Italy in the early 1990s Fil Barreca, aged just 21, discovered his intrinsic connection to working in a vineyard and growing grapes on a highly innovative Sicilian winery. He took inspiration and passion back to Donnybrook and begun planting vines immediately establishing the winery in 1994.

With 46 hectares under vine the predominant varieties include Shiraz, cult favourite Barbera, Shiraz Malbec, Zinfandel, Sangiovese and many more.

The sparkling and fortified wines are proudly 100% estate bottled, including the Estate’s premium Extra Virgin Olive Oil which is produced from the Estates premium olive plantation.

Situated on the Blackwood River just 9km from Bridgetown townsite, handcrafted Shiraz, Sparkling Shiraz, Barbera, Tempranillo and Fortified wines can be tasted at the cellar door.

Description

Bridgetown Winery is a stunning 14 acre property sitting alongside the Blackwood River. Grapes grown on the property are Shiraz, Barbera, Tempranillo, Durif and Brown Muscat. All wine produced is from grapes grown on the property or from properties in the Blackwood Valley. The tawny and ruby ports are produced from Shiraz grapes grown on the property. Priding itself on producing low-intervention wines, all fertilisers are certified organic and fining of the wine is done by filtering and animal products are not part of the fining process. Wines were previously produced in the Estate's pump shed until the winery expanded and opened a cellar door in 2014. Description

Cape Bouvard Winery & Brewery is the only winery in the Mandurah shire. A destination the family will love, make a day of tasting delicious boutique wines and beers, indulging on a local seafood and discovering host of unique natural attractions at the property including the Thrombolites; the world’s first life form.

The name of the winery comes from WA’s early history. When French sailors discovered Western Australia in 1801, they named the area "Cape of Bouvard" after French astronomer Alexis Bouvard. The name lives on at Cape Bouvard Winery & Brewery.

The Wines & Wine Tasting

White varieties include Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Verdelho, Chardonnay and a Classic White, and reds include Merlot, Grenache, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines are available for tasting at the cellar door and winery and brewery tours can also be arranged in advance.

The Food

With a motto that good quality food shouldn’t cost the earth, Cape Bouvard serves up modern Australian, café and relaxed restaurant style food featuring local produce wherever possible. Their alfresco overlooks the picturesque vineyards, forest and lawn while the signature indoor log fire is perfect for winter. Open for lunch Tuesday-Sunday.

Unique Highlights

Lake Clifton is home to unique Thrombolites (living rocks), and this is one of only two places in Western Australia that are home to the world's first life form. There is a special look out platform to fully appreciate these fascinating structures. The winery is also bordered by the Yalgorup National Park, home to a plethora of tuart and peppermint woodlands.

Kids are welcome. Pack a frisbee, cricket or bocce set to make the most of the expansive lawns.

Description

As Kalamunda locals, Dennis and Carline Humphrey are no strangers to the terrain of the Perth Hills. With encouragement from local wine guru Peter Fimmel, Chardonnay and Semillon varieties were first planted in 1998 on the famous Red Gum soil high on the western ridge of the Bickley Valley.

Description

This family owned, single-vineyard property was established in 1999. The Fokkema family selected the site for its ideal gravel loam soils, ample clean water and northern-facing slopes. The vineyard has been farmed organically for 15 years and has completed its 'Certified Organic' accreditation. The Churchview vineyard is known to grow Margaret River's most extensive amount of varieties within a single vineyard, with sixteen different types of grapes planted. The Wines Many of the wines are matured in oak, and Churchview prides itself on investing in the best quality French oak. Four wine ranges are made from the diverse varieties within the vineyard and offer easy drinking through to rare and fine collector wines. All the classic Margaret River varieties are made. The St Johns range features less-common varieties including a Zinfandel, Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre, Viognier and Marsanne. Wine Tasting The diverse wine range can be tasted at the Cellar Door which is located within a period cottage at the estate. The Heritage Listed St John the Baptist Anglican Church can be seen from the tasting room, hence the name. Many of the wines cannot be found for purchase anywhere other than the cellar door. Allow 30 minutes for a full tasting. Open 10am-5pm Monday to Saturday. Description

Established in the late 1870s, this family-owned property, about 6km from Toodyay has over five generations of winemaking history. The winery has been in the Wood family since 1919, and still contains many of the original 470 and 770 gallon casks within its cellar.

All grapes are grown on scenic undulating slopes around the property, and are farmed with environmental conservation as one of the winery's main values. The natural approach sees only mineral fertilisers and soil microbes used to grow chemical-free, quality grapes.

The Wines

Coorinja produces a large selection of table and fortified wines including Shiraz, Grenache, Cabernet-Shiraz, Port, Sherry, Muscat, Liqueur Muscat, Ginger Wine and Marsala. The wines are handpicked by the Wood family and their friends and pressed in an old wooden basket press, following the same family tradition used for over five generations.

Unique Highlights

Coorinja is an Aboriginal word believed to mean "place of the seven springs". These natural springs surround the property. A short five minute walk down a bush track reveals remnants of the Ringa Bridge, a significant railway track built circa 1887 that was closed down in 1966.

Driftwood Estate is a boutique winery set in the stunning Wilyabrup sub-region of Margaret River, Western Australia. Established by Tom and Helen Galopoulos in 1989 on what had previously been a country retreat, the winery immediately received acclaim when its first wine, a Semillon produced in 1993, won a special commendation in a British competition.

In 2009, leading Australian wine writer James Halliday rated Driftwood Estate as one of the best wineries in the Margaret River region. This result has continued into the 2018 Wine Companion, where Driftwood Estate has again been rated a 5 Star Winery. The vine resources are exceptional, having had years of nurturing to ensure they produce premium fruit showcasing the Wilyabrup sub-region beautifully.

The winemaking philosophy behind the Driftwood wines is one of simplicity – quality wines are made in the vineyard. While winemaking can have a positive input, having premium quality fruit is essential. This is why Driftwood Estate is so fortunate to be located in one of the greatest viticultural areas in the world, sourcing super premium fruit year in year out. The wines are produced under four labels, Single Site, Artifacts, The Collection, and Oceania.

Our Single Site range of Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon showcases the best of Driftwood Estate. Over the years, our vineyards have grown in maturity and pedigree, and we have produced Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon from the 2016 vintage to reflect this, with releases occurring soon.

Artifacts are the more complex styles, demonstrating the intense characters old vine fruit can develop, and once in the winery, utilising oak influence and subtle winemaking techniques resulting in wines of strength, elegance, and integrity that will drink beautifully young whilst also reward careful cellaring.

The Collection range showcases fruit driven, regionally renowned wines that are designed to be enjoyed in their youth – vibrant blends and crisp, clean wines for everyday drinking.

The Oceania range is predominately a cellar door and online range, offering a Rosé, a White Blend, a Sparkling and a Tawny.

Description

The land on which the Ducketts Mill winery is located started out with a small 5 acre planting of riesling, cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc. Additional plantings have increased the total vineyard area to 18 acres. 

Combining their love for cheese and wine, Ross and Dallas Lewis run a homely cellar door nestled in the lush Scotsdale Valley.  Set in an old timber farmstead and overlooking the vineyard, visitors can settle back and enjoy cheese platters matched to the cool-climate wines from the estate in Denmark. 

There are more than 40 varieties of cheese made under the Denmark Farmhouse Cheese brand and everything is made from locally sourced dairy produce. Left over milk is used to make ice-cream and fudge.

The Wines
Winemaker James Kellie is responsible for the concise collection of wines at Duckett’s Mill.  Sauvignon blanc, riesling, semillon, chardonnay, merlot, cabernet sauvignon and franc are all grown on the estate vineyards.  There is also a small collection of fortified wines, which are well-matched to the generous cheese and meat platters.

All wines and cheeses are available for tasting at the cellar door on Scotsdale Road from Monday to Sunday, 10-5.

Unique Highlights

Description

Set on 165 acres, Fishbone Cellar Door and Japanese Restaurant is part of Fishbone Wines farm and planted with Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Tempranillo. The vineyard setting is typical to the Margaret River region, north facing with a combination of loam and sandy pea gravel with a well-drained soil structure. The focus is on stripped back, raw quality winemaking, which is what the Fishbone symbol represents.

Description

Owners Sasha and Ben McDonald refer to the southern Karridale sub-region as the ‘cooler sister’ to the rest of the Margaret River cape. Their winery brings this cool to life in both the style of its wines and the estate vibe. Ben is the fifth generation on the McDonald family farm. He single-handedly planted the 6-acre vineyard when aged 19 and has continued to evolve his family farm since. In addition to vines, the property has over 270 fruit trees, several vegetable gardens and a few thousand sheep.

The property follows sustainable farming practices to encourage a healthy eco-system, with all elements coexisting to improve the overall heartbeat of the farm. Sheep graze among the vines for six months after harvest to control the weeds and add nutrients into the cycle. Bug pressure is taken care of by guinea fowls and chickens.

The Wines
The wines are handmade with an intuitive, hands-off approach and every parcel of fruit is managed individually through the winemaking process. Natural yeasts are used for authentic, characterful wines. Often their trusty old basket press is used, making for a true artisanal feel. Alongside Margaret River signature varieties, check out the intriguing Fumé Blanc, Rosé and Vintage Port.

Wine Tasting
The pair converted their grandfather’s timber shed into a tasting room which is open daily from 10am – 5pm Thursday to Monday to taste their wines. Tuesday and Wednesday tastings by appointment.

The Food
A range of tasting plates, bursting with tasty interpretations of the farm’s fresh-picked seasonal produce, incredible grass-fed lamb and whatever seafood has been caught off the shores of Augusta by their sea mates. Vegetarian and dietary options are catered for.

Unique Highlights
Get the true farm experience with a progressive tasting through the vines, macadamias and hop garden to gain a local’s understanding of what a ‘ground to glass’ philosophy truly entails. The tour is extra special from January to April during harvest. Bookings recommended, begins 10:30am daily.

Harris Organic Wines is an extremely friendly place. Make your way past the cat and free-range chickens to the cellar door of this small boutique winery and you can enjoy a seated tasting of organic wines with winemaker and owner Duncan Harris (a $15.00 tasting fee applies, redeemable against any wine purchases).

Sustainability is central to Harris Organic’s philosophy. The award-winning certified organic wines are made with natural yeasts and the bare minimum of additives and preservatives. The grapes are irrigated only by what they receive from the sky and Duncan never uses any pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilisers.

Minimal artificial energy sources are required. An underground cellar was built to obtain naturally cooler storage temperatures. The wines mature in oak barriques and hogsheads, ultimately sealed in recyclable glass bottles. Returned Harris Organic bottles receive a $1 refund per bottle.

You can learn how organic wine is made with a guided walking tour through the vineyard, underground cellar and winery, finishing with a taste of some of the very best of  Duncan's organic white wine, organic red wine and fortified sweet wines. Duncan is also licensed to distil spirits and sells his organic vodka and brandy's at the cellar door and online.

Established in 2000 by the Hillier family, the estate is a single vineyard producer that also operates a microbrewery and accommodation from its premises. Description

Harvey River Estate is a family owned winery located in the acclaimed Geographe wine region of south-west Western Australia.

The family have a long and significant history in the south-west's agricultural industry with the original farm dating back to the early 1900s when the current owner's father emigrated from Italy and planted citrus a large citrus orchard. Over the following years the farm grew and the business diversified to also include sheep and cattle. Of course, like many of Italian migrants, the family made their own wines.

From humble beginnings, the second generation evolved the winery business from vineyards into wine production under the Harvey River Estate label in 1999. The first commercial vintage was produced in 2000 and the business went on to be awarded the Jimmy Watson award for its 2009 Joseph River Cabernet. 

In 2015 a new cellar door, warehouse and administration building was built on the banks of the Harvey River, being only 50m from the original cellar door which allowed access to the now famous ‘Big Orange’ on Third Street to be retained.

The Harvey River Estate vineyards are just 800m away on Fifth Street, with almost 50 acres under vine planted to Chardonnay, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Formerly Hotham Valley Estate, the vineyard was planted in 1988. Current owners Leonard Bruin and Wouter Denig converted the operation to follow strict organic and biodynamic practices in 2002. Situated at an altitude of 350 metres, the vineyards enjoy ideal growing conditions of hot summers and cool winters, evident in the wines which combine elegance, structure and vibrant fruit characters.

Hotham Ridge has won over 30 different medals and 11 trophies from various Australian wine shows since 2003.

Jadran was established in 1914 by Vladimir (Wally) Radojkovich, who purchased 22 acres of land with a desire to establish a vineyard and create a winery. Since then, Jadran Wines has welcomed many generations of family members to the vineyard; most recently, Wally's grandson Paul in 1990. Jadran incorporates traditional and modern winemaking methods to create a distinctive character in the winery's expansive range which is made from fruit sourced locally and from the Western Australia's south-west. Centuries of French tradition has been combined with WA’s rich soil to create a little piece of France right in the heart of the Swan Valley.  

Little River Winery prides itself on quality over quantity, producing wines with flavour and finesse using traditional French winemaking methods, no pesticides and minimum preservatives. The yield is lower due to the vineyard being non-irrigated, producing a higher concentration of flavour in smaller batches.

Alongside Little River Winery is the Little River Café, in which guests can accompany fine French wine with authentic French-inspired mouth-watering meals. Neira and Lucy have constructed a menu packed full of both light nibbles and hearty dishes for a delicious, unforgettable lunch. Relax in the charming, cosy café or overlook the luscious vineyard in the small but sweet courtyard. 

The unique and rustic winery also offers a beautiful, intimate setting for private, evening functions. Be wined and dined alongside the vineyard while taking in the ambience of the scenic Swan Valley.

Lunches are available every day except Wednesday and Thursday, from 12.00 pm - 4.00 pm weekdays and 12.00 pm - 5.00 pm weekends. Evening functions can also be booked.

THE BORDEAUX WAY

Grapes are carefully hand harvested and crushed immediately, then pressed in a traditional basket press. The juice is settled for debourdage at 2°C. for at least forty eight hours. Fermentation takes place at a constant 15° C with a secret selection of yeast strain added for each wine. No sulphur dioxide is used until after the fermentation is completed.

Chardonnay, Viognier and Marsanne are never wooded, but are kept on the fine lees, after a first racking, for several months. Noble Classic undergo a subtle wood aging for a short period.White Wines are usually bottled after eight months.

Vatting of the reds varies from year to year but is never less than two weeks and can be for up to a month. After vatting a light pressing is done after which the wine settles and undergoes malolactic fermentation in closed stainless steel tanks at between 15° and 18°C.

After a month or so the wines are transferred into French oak barrique for between fifteen and twenty four months.

Three generations of the Hammond family have toiled together to create the vineyards of Oakway Estate within the Geographe Wine Region. Owners Wayne and Ria planted their vines in 1997, and following success with winemaking, the former orchard farm now supports a boutique winery and cellar door, nano brewery, vineyard, a plantation of sustainable blue gum trees and beef cattle.

Description

The Olive Farm property dates back to 1829 and was established by an English botanist named Thomas Waters who brought grapevine cuttings and olive trees with him when he settled in Perth. He planted the olive trees first, hence the name, but wine was soon produced, with the first vintage in 1834. (Much of which became currency for bartering with the local shopkeepers!)

In 1933, Ivan Yurisich purchased the property. He had immigrated from Yugoslavia at the turn of the century and after working in the Goldfields and outback of WA, decided to try his hand at winemaking. The property has remained in the family for four generations.

The Wines
Historically, The Olive Farm made fortified wines which were sold by the cask to the Goldfields in Western Australia. The winery become one of the first in WA to produce Traditional Method Sparkling wines back in the 1960s. These remain a core of range which is now named ‘Olivine’.

Still table wines were introduced in the 1970s and achieved great success in the local wine shows. The current range is diverse, with over 35 sweet to dry white, red, sparkling and fortified wines. There are all the Swan Valley classics, along with some other surprise varieties like Tempranillo, Traminer, Durif and Cabernet Franc.

Wine Tasting
The Yurisich family built their ‘dream’ winery and cellar door in 2007. It is set on a 24-acre property in the heart of the Swan Valley and has received significant awards for its architecture and interior design. Visitors are welcome to sample from the full range of wines, with tastings available 10am – 5pm daily. A walking tour of the vineyard and winery can be booked in advance, it begins at 10.30am.

Unique Highlights: The Cheese
Taste and graze from a selection of over 75+ different international and local benchmark cheeses at the family’s Cheese Barrel Café. Just metres from the cellar door, this architecturally-designed gem of a property is a place of wine and cheese-lovers’ dreams. The all-day menu is both flexible and generous, with cheeseboards starting from $35-$40. Free cheese tastings are available too. They are best experienced between 10am and 1pm before it gets too busy. Families, children and even dogs are welcome.

The Cheese Barrel Café is open 10am – 5pm Monday and Tuesday, and 10am-5pm Wednesday to Sunday.

Description

Established by Murray and Pamela Lincoln, a couple from Perth who built a sustainable, energy efficient home and vineyard on their property nearby Albany in 2000. The winery is part of WOOF (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farm) and offers travellers a place to stay in return for their labour on a range of viticulture and winemaking activities. Over 400 visitors have participated to date.

The organic vineyard is located in the east of the Great Southern Wine Region, where its climate and soils grow elegant fruit with minerality and natural acidity. The property also has a range of organic gardens growing plums, apples, cherries, avocado, guavas, stone fruit, olives, berries and citrus.

Key activities that underpin their approach to sustainability including recycling, composting, revegetation and the use of renewable. The pair have planted thousands of trees on the 20 acres of land and their vineyard and cellar door are powered almost entirely by solar energy.

The Wine

Originally built in 1928 as the original family home that Paul shared with his parents and seven siblings, in 1982 the home was renovated into the fine dining restaurant, with high ceilings, original antique fixtures and jarrah floor boards.

A regular haunt for local clientele, The roomy layout, high ceilings and forgiving stone walls cool during the summer, while the pot-belly fire and cosy entrance lounge makes the restaurant equally popular in winter,

The menu has a local-produce focus including fresh oysters, roast duck breast, garlic prawns, carpet-bag steak and succulent veal rib-eye.

The restaurant is only open Friday for lunch, and Wednesday though to Saturday for dinner. The restaurant is also popular for intimate wedding celebrations, anniversaries, birthdays and business luncheons.

HISTORY

From humble beginnings in 1948, Paul Conti Wines has become one of WA’s most reputable and respected boutique, family-owned wineries.

Before it was a winery, in 1927 the Woodvale property was home to the Conti family who lived their self-sufficient lifestyle of growing vegetables, making pasta, cheese and milk from the resident cow to nurturing vines to create wine. In the 1940’s Carmelo Conti begun planting vines to expand to a modest sized vineyard whereby the cellar was located underneath the family house, dug out by the Conti brothers, still existing today.

From 1968 Carmelo’s son Paul began upgrading the small winery to a larger more premium winery where early success was achieved with the Shiraz. The wines to this day are still created with some of the original vines planted on the property.

An integral part of the Peel Region for over 40 years, the first vines at Peel Estate were planted in 1973. Owned and operated by Will Nairn, the winery features 12 acres of vines, and its unique coastal limestone soils and high-water table provide ideal viticulture conditions. Wines at Peel Estate are made onsite in the original architect-designed colonial style brick and timber winery, that visitors can observe from the rustic mezzanine tasting area. The Wines Established by Will Nairn, Shiraz was the first variety planted followed by Chenin Blanc and Zinfandel in 1976 and Cabernet Sauvignon in 1979. Today, the extensive range also includes Verdelho, Chardonnay, Rose, Sparkling and Fortifieds. Cellar Door Open daily from 10am-5pm, enjoy a wine tasting in the charming, rustic cellar door that overlooks the winemaking floor. Bring along a picnic and enjoy your favourite Peel Estate wine in the beautiful grounds under the Tuart trees. During harvest in late-summer, lucky visitors may get to see grapes being crushed and pressed along with red wines fermenting. This small, family-owned vineyard has been dry-growing consistent, quality grapes for over 30 years. Treeton Estate has a significant focus on environmental sustainability and is a member of national sustainable wine program, Entwine.

The Wines
All of Margaret River’s best suited varieties are grown and the estate prides itself on its clean, green approach to winemaking, through which it uses minimal allergens in the winemaking process. Through optimum vineyard management and a scrupulously clean and cool processing environment, their winemaker David McGowan has eliminated the need for additives, making the wines ideal for wine drinkers who experience sensitivities.
