Description

Best known and loved as a wedding and events venue, this rustic 1920s winery and vineyard is located on the banks of the Swan River. The ethos of Albion on Swan involves simple, back-to-nature quality with minimum environmental impact.  Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Shiraz are made.

Description

Named Gourmet Traveller WINE’s Star Cellar Door (2017), this relative new-comer estate has elevated itself into one of Margaret River’s prized wine destinations.

Amelia Park Wines began in 2009 led by coveted winemaker Jeremy Gordon, producing a hand-crafted wine range with grapes from Margaret River and Frankland River. Jeremy is well-known for his detailed approach and a highly celebrated tenure at Flametree Wines, during which time his Cabernet Merlot won Australia’s most coveted wine award, the Jimmy Watson Trophy.

The Wines

Amelia Park Wines range from highly-drinkable to collectable styles, with a focus on Margaret River’s signature varieties. Immense critical acclaim has been received since day one, including awards at the International Wine Challenge and Decanter Wine Awards for the Cabernet Sauvignons and Shiraz, in particular.

Wine Tasting

The architecturally designed cellar door makes a dramatic statement with its bold, decorative interiors and stunning views over the Wilyabrup Valley. Wine tastings are available daily or for more of a culinary experience, enjoy a wine flights paired with cheese and charcuterie in the ambient Cellar Door Barrel Room. Tours and private tastings can be booked in advance. 

The Food

A French-bistro inspired lunch menu is available daily at the Amelia Park Restaurant, where a wood fired oven and grill is centrepiece to much of the food. The cuisine is modern and seasonal with a focus toward locally-sourced produce. It is operated by local hospitality legends, the Gold Plate awarded Blair and Renee Allen who were previous owners of Dunsborough favourite, Piari & Co.

Visiting on a Sunday? Start your day a with pre-wine tasting breakfast at the Amelia Park Restaurant, open from 8.30am. Amelia Park also operates a Lodge in northern Margaret River, a stylish and family-friendly tavern offering drinks and simple cuisine.

Description

As Kalamunda locals, Dennis and Carline Humphrey are no strangers to the terrain of the Perth Hills. With encouragement from local wine guru Peter Fimmel, Chardonnay and Semillon varieties were first planted in 1998 on the famous Red Gum soil high on the western ridge of the Bickley Valley.

The Wines

Carldenn Homestead Wines offer an expansive variety of reds, whites and sparkling wines designed to appeal to any palette. Each vintage has a unique character with different complexities, from the fresh fruit and creamy finish of the unwooded Chardonnay to the full-bodied, bold and delicious Shiraz.

Located amongst the bushland of Walliston, Carldenn Homestead's cellar door includes an open bar and picnic area with handcrafted jarrah tables made by Dennis himself. After eating and drinking, you are free to wander amongst the vines.

Description

This family owned, single-vineyard property was established in 1999. The Fokkema family selected the site for its ideal gravel loam soils, ample clean water and northern-facing slopes. The vineyard has been farmed organically for 15 years and is in the process of completing its ‘Certified Organic’ accreditation.

The Churchview vineyard is known to grow Margaret River’s most extensive amount of varieties within a single vineyard, with sixteen different types of grapes planted.

The Wines
The wines are made onsite at the property’s winery. Many are matured in oak, and Churchview prides itself on investing in the best quality French oak. Four wine ranges are made from the diverse varieties within the vineyard and offer easy drinking through to rare and fine collector wines. All the classic Margaret River varieties are made. The St Johns range features less-common varieties including a Zinfandel, Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre, Viognier and Marsanne.

Wine Tasting
The diverse wine range can be tasted at the Cellar Door which is located within a period cottage at the estate. The Heritage Listed St John the Baptist Anglican Church can be seen from the tasting room, hence the name. Many of the wines cannot be found for purchase anywhere other than the cellar door. Allow 30 minutes for a full tasting. Open 10am-5pm Monday to Saturday.

Dogs are welcome (on leash) and visitors are invited to bring a picnic and make a day of enjoying the beautiful wines, stunning vineyard views and manicured gardens.

Unique Highlights
Those seeking curio wines will love discovering the wild fermented Riesling, Viognier and Chenin Blanc; varieties not often seen in Margaret River.

Description

Bruce Dukes is a long-time local winemaker with a great reputation. For many years he led the winemaking team at Pierro in Margaret River, and says a lengthy stint at Niebaum-Coppola in the Napa Valley gave him great confidence in his philosophies. An Agronomist, Bruce approaches winemaking from an agricultural point of view, focussing immensely on soil health and sustainable farming, which he believes reaps the best rewards for the wine and the environment.

The Wines
Domaine Naturaliste makes three ranges of wine from classic Margaret River varietals to showcase his artisanal approach. The range names are the Discovery Series, Direction Series and Flagship Series. His Artus Chardonnay and Morus Cabernet Sauvignon were major winners at the 2018 International Wine Challenge in London, each receiving the trophies for Best Margaret River Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Wine Tasting
Domaine Naturaliste now has it's own estate in Wilyabrup with a 21 Ha vineyard and a picturesque Cellar Door (formerly Knee Deep Wines). Open from 10am - 5pm daily, visitors can relax in the vineyard setting with seated wine flights of Domaine Naturaliste wines accompanied by charcuterie or cheese.

Description

Located in Frankland River 90 kilometres from the coast amidst the Great Southern’s valleys and slopes, the Ferngrove site was selected in 1998. The vineyard is nestled in undulating farmland surrounded by olive groves, wheat, sheep and cattle which enable a sheltered environment to grow grapes, while it still receives the cooling ocean influence for elegant fruit.

Ferngrove Wines are known for their intense flavour, fine acid and tannins that are truly reflective of the Frankland River region style. A range of varieties are produced across multiple price brackets, delivering value at each level. Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz and Cabernet blends are the focus.

The winery is also the site of one of Australia’s largest winery solar power systems, using 696 panels to power all of its operations.

The Wines

Description

Happs Wines has delighted visitors from near and far at their warm and rustic cellar door for over 35 years. Their aim to provide a wine for every palate is reflected in their extensive portfolio and willingness to break convention in terms of the size of their range and number of wine varieties within it.

The Wines
Happs Wines produces more than thirty grape varieties, all made from estate-grown fruit at two Margaret River vineyards. The northern Dunsborough vineyard enjoys a warmer growing season of rich and ripe qualities, while the southern ‘Three Hills’ property brings cooler-climate elegance and finesse. The wine range includes sweet, dry, preservative free, fortified, rare varietal, verjuice and more.

Wine Tasting
The rustic cellar door was built in the 1970s and is constructed of handmade mud-bricks. Look closely to see builders’ finger marks on the walls, capturing, “the essence of old school Margaret River". It's not flashy, minimalistic or modern, just warm and inviting. The surroundings feel homely and the cellar door staff offer a friendly, educated approach to explain the extensive portfolio of wines.

Culinary Experiences
Grab a basket and select from a range of gourmet cheese, meats, pickled vegetables and preserves from more than 15 local producers, pair with some Happs Wine and indulge! Picnic on the lawn, at the outside tables, or inside if it’s a rainy day.

The Commonage Pottery 
Happs Pottery began in Vasse in the early 1970s. The current workshop and gallery located onsite was built in 1978. See artists at work in the act of creation. A wide range of handicrafts and jewellery from local artisans is available.

Family Owned & Operated Since 1978
Back in the 1970s two young teachers named Erl and Ros Happ were inspired by the notion that world-class wines might be produced in the Margaret River region. At the time, new grape varieties were becoming more readily available in WA and this encouraged the couple to not only plant the usual cultivars that became a mark of the region but to experiment with unusual selections that presented more risk. This pioneering spirit has paid off. Since 1978, Happs Wines has become a hallmark of combining science and art to create unique wines of distinctive quality, with a loyal following.

Description

Established in 2000 by the Hillier family, the estate is a single vineyard producer that also operates a microbrewery and accommodation from its premises. Situated 5km north of Collie, on the eastern border of the Geographe Wine Region, this prime location provides ironstone gravel soils and a cool altitude to enable production of premium wines with finesse and flavour.

The Wines

Harris River produce Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Merlot, Shiraz, Verdelho and Chardonnay. They also have the unique offer of purchasing wine in a keg, perfect for events or who like to keep their environment footprint minimal.

Cellar Door & Restaurant

Complimentary wine and beer tastings can be enjoyed alongside a tasty, seasonal tapas grazing menu. Open Wednesday to Sunday 12pm - 3:30pm. The restaurant is open for light, healthy breakfasts and tapas lunches from Friday to Sunday, 10am - 4pm. Visitors can dine alfresco on the verandah, have a picnic on the lawn, or sit inside the restaurant beside a cosy log fire.

This ultra-boutique, single-vineyard winery was established in 1995 by George and Mary Heydon. The vineyard, comprising Chardonnay, Semillon, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot was planted on idyllic land in Wilyabrup in 1988 and is managed primarily with biodynamic, organic and traditional viticulture principles.

The Wines
The boutique winery makes just 2,000 dozen wines each vintage, focused on Margaret River’s hero varieties. The emphasis is on expressing their wine’s single estate origin and employs minimal intervention winemaking techniques. The highly-regarded wine collection is made by long-term Margaret River winemaker Mark Messenger, also known for his work at Juniper Estate, and historically at Cape Mentelle. Among numerous major accolades, Heydon Estate received the Wine of Provenance Award at the Margaret River Wine Show in 2017 for its Cabernet Sauvignon.

Wine Tasting
Hands-on and enthusiastic owner, Irish-born Mary Heydon personally hosts guests at the authentic and welcoming cellar door, located just 15 minutes north of Margaret River town.  Complimentary tastings are available daily from 10.30am – 5pm. Description

Formerly Hotham Valley Estate, the vineyard was planted in 1988. Current owners Leonard Bruin and Wouter Denig converted the operation to follow strict organic and biodynamic practices in 2002. Situated at an altitude of 350 metres, the vineyards enjoy ideal growing conditions of hot summers and cool winters, evident in the wines which combine elegance, structure and vibrant fruit characters.

Hotham Ridge has won over 30 different medals and 11 trophies from various Australian wine shows since 2003.

The Wines

Varieties include Chenin Blanc, Semillon, Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Shiraz, Tempranillo, Verdelho and Zinfandel. A Mistelle white port or Shiraz port are also available in winter.

Cellar Door

Open from Friday-Sunday 11am-3pm, the rustic cellar door offers a stunning environment to discover the wines and learn about organic and biodynamic winemaking principles.

Unique Highlights

Check out the large rammed-earth barrel room that has been transformed into an art gallery with an industrial style. Ten different exhibitions are shown each year. Two self catered cottages are available in the Hotham Ridge property too.

The name House of Cards is inspired by the gamble winemakers and growers take every vintage, forced to play the hand they are dealt by Mother Nature. Owners Travis and Elizabeth Wray are personally involved in every aspect of operations, from tending the vines to making wine, bottling, marketing and sales.

The Wines
The fruit that goes into House of Cards wine all comes from a single vineyard planted in 1997 on Caves Road at the Northern end of the Margaret River Wine Region, enabling the unique terroir to be reflected in each vintage. To get the best 'hand' possible, organic and biodynamic principles are used to improve soil health and vine nutrition. Howard Park is the biggest producer of sparkling wines in West Australia, and the only winery in Margaret River to make Champagne-method in-house.

Established in 2017, the Haywood Wine Company is located at the Island Brook Estate to the north of the Margaret River wine region. The Metricup vineyard was first planted in 1985, utilising specific grape varieties to match the property's well drained gravel loam soils.

The Atkinson family has a passion for creating beautiful high-quality wines and over 40 years have planted, picked, pruned, plunged and perfected their skills to the point of perfection. They are equally passionate about the land that produces the grapes that make the wine and reduce their impact on the environment with energy saving, recycling and sustainability practices.

THE FOOD

The Jane Brook Pantry and Cellar offers a unique dining experience including delicious Mediterranean style shared picnic baskets, which can be enjoyed at the table. Much of the fresh produce is grown on site and includes terrine, pate, house-baked sourdough, cheese and home-made condiments. You can dine on the deck, under the vines or bring a rug and stroll over to the lawn for a picnic. Afterwards, treat yourself to a delicious dessert and freshly-brewed coffee from local roaster BOLT, or even a beer.

THE WINE

Jane Brook offers a wide range of premium varietal wines. The sparking range includes a white, pink and Blanc de Blanc. The whites include a Plain Jane Classic White, the Sauvignon Blanc, the Sauvignon Blanc- Semillion and the Chardonnay. There is only one Rose but a number of red varieties including a classic red, Shiraz, the Back Block Shiraz, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and lastly the Atkinson family reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. Fortifieds include Brandy, Liqueur Muscat, Liqueur Topaque, Liqueur Verdelho, and a single white fortified.

SWAN VALLEY VINEYARD

The iconic Back Block Shiraz is made from grapes hand-picked from the 70 year old vines in the home vineyard.

MARGARET RIVER

The cooler more moderate climate of Margaret River produces crisp, zesty and fresh Sauvignon Blanc and delicate, full-flavoured Chardonnay, where were planted over 10 years ago in the Shovelgate Vineyard. Description

Originally called Wright’s and planted in 1973 on excellent soils beside the Wilyabrup Brook, the property was renamed Juniper by the late Roger Hill and wife Gillian Anderson in 1998.

The site has a rich history. In the 19th century the road from Busselton to the south of Margaret River ran through what is now the vineyard, hence the wine range called “the Crossing”. The present block was created by a sub division by the Junipers, a well-known Western Australian artist family.

The Wines

The vineyard is unirrigated and the vines hand-pruned and hand-picked at vintage. It was originally planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Semillon and subsequent plantings of Petit Verdot, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec in 1999. Winemaker Mark Messenger has a longstanding reputation for the excellent quality and regional typicity of his wines which are made onsite at Juniper Estate’s state of the art facilities.

Wine Tastings

Enjoy a picturesque setting in the serene part of Wilyabrup, with views of rolling hills and the vineyards. Wines by the glass or bottle can also be enjoyed on a peaceful lawn beside the Wilyabrup Brook or in winter, beside the log fire on the winery’s comfy leather couches.

One of WA’s most awarded winemakers, Larry Cherubino Wines makes an expressive range from a collection of estate-owned vineyards in Margaret River, Pemberton and the Great Southern (Frankland River, Mount Barker and Porongurup areas). The label began in Frankland River in 2004 when Larry and wife, Edwina purchased an historic property called Riversdale. The inaugural 2005 vintage wines were made in the family’s spare room! These days they are made in a well-equipped winery in Margaret River.

Larry Cherubino Wines was named James Halliday’s Australian Winery of the Year in 2011, and also Australia’s Best-Value Winery by Halliday in 2017. Winemaker Larry Cherubino has a string of Winemaker of the Year nominations with leading Australian and UK wine media.

The Wines
Following the belief that great wines are made in the vineyard, Larry Cherubino Wines are made from six specialty vineyards in Western Australia’s leading south-west wine regions. The wines are estate-grown and the vineyards follow a mix of principles from the schools of organics and traditional farming with the aim to encourage the vines to exist in a healthy ecosystem, for plant health. The range has a characterful selection of site-driven examples of Riesling and Chardonnay, alongside alternative varieties including Fiano and Pinot Blanc. Classic Cabernet and Shiraz are made too.

Wine Tasting
Enjoy a seasonal range of wines for tasting at all times alongside a selection of cellar door exclusives. An enomatic machine holds a curated range of rare back vintage wines which can be enjoyed as educational (and highly enjoyable) flights. Private tastings in the board room or barrel room can be booked in advance for groups. Antipasti and dinners are available by special arrangement.

Description

Established in 1989, Lost Lake Vineyard is situated in the scenic Eastbrook Valley in the heart of the Pemberton Wine Region. Ash and Tia Lewkowski took it over in 2014, and along with grape vines, raise alpacas, sheep on their property.  The 8 hectare vineyard has some of the region’s oldest. vines and produces around fifty tonnes of premium cool-climate fruit.

The Wines

Winemaker, Ash follows a purist approach and follows environmentally conscious principles to optimise their site and make the Lost Lake range which includes Pinot Rose, Honey Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Shiraz. Two ciders are also produced.

Cellar Door

The homely, dog-friendly cellar door, complete with a striking painted mural is open Saturday and Sunday from 11am-4pm. For something a little different, book in to Ash’s 60 minute wine appreciation course. It operates on Sundays by appointment.

Millbrook Winery is situated in the picturesque wine region of the Perth Hills, a 50 minute drive south-east of Perth. It is located on a historic property called the Chestnut Farm that was established in the 19th century as an orchard and planted with grapevines in 1865 to provide fruit to the local timber-millers in Jarrahdale.

Owners Peter and Lee Fogarty set their sights on winemaking, planting vines in 1996 and in 2001 a stunning winery, including a tasting room and restaurant was completed.

The Wines

The attraction to the Perth Hills was the uncanny similarities to the Northern Rhône region. Shiraz and Viognier were chosen as the two flagship varieties and have become recognised as excellent examples of both styles. The fruit grown on the Estate is high quality with low yields a core objective and a small batch winemaking approach is followed.

Millbrook, together with the iconic Lake’s Folly vineyard in the Hunter Valley, Evans and Tate in Margaret River, Deep Woods Estate in Margaret River and Smithbrook Wines in Pemberton, forms part of the Fogarty Wine Group.

Wine Tasting

The cellar door is in a striking stone chateau-like property with spectacular views and an open fireplace for winter. It is open Thursday to Monday 10am to 5pm offering tastings until 4:45pm and a light menu until 4:30pm. Group tastings can be arranged in advance.  

The Food

The Millbrook restaurant is rated one of the top restaurants in WA by the West Australian Good Food Guide (2018) and is a Gourmet Traveller Top 100 Australian Restaurant (2018). Head Chef, Guy Jeffreys is known for his dedicated 'garden to plate' philosophy. When he's not in the kitchen, he is in the Millbrook Estate garden, selecting fruit, vegetables and herbs from the more than 100 varieties he grows there. Throughout 2017, Millbrook Restaurant didn’t place a single order for vegetables! Open for lunch Thursday to Monday. Bookings are essential.

Description

Early pioneers of the wine industry in WA's South West, Andrew and Sue Mountford established the winery in 1987 after spending three years researching the Pemberton area. After analysing soil samples, rainfall and grape varieties best suited to the region, six hectares of vines were planted and an award winning winery and cellar door facility was hand-built with bricks made onsite.  In 2003 the winery became the first NASAA Certified Organic winery in the region with the vineyard certification following in 2006.

The Wines

The range focuses on Pemberton’s most respected wine varieties, namely Merlot, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc. In 2018 Mountford Wines released Australia’s first Truffle Liqueur made from local Manjimup truffles. The winery is also home to the Tangletoe Ciders which feature organic handcrafted ciders and vinegars.

Cellar Door

One of the first wineries in the region, Mountford's cellar door was crafted from hand-made adobe bricks sourced onsite, and has become an icon of the region. An art gallery opened in 1994 and hosts ongoing seasonal exhibitions representing local artists. Open daily from 10am-4pm.

Description

Owner and winemaker Robert Gheradi was born with wine in his blood, spending his Summers growing up picking grapes in the Swan Valley and Margaret River with his extended Italian family to make into wine at his Nonna’s house. Whilst completing his degree in viticulture and winemaking, Robert worked for the esteemed Moss Wood winery, and later at Cullen Wines before spending time with leading Barolo producers before returning to Margaret River to establish Mr Barval (combining Margaret River, Barolo and Valtellina) in 2015.

The centuries-old winemaking traditions of Barolo influenced the ancient winemaking techniques utilised within Mr Barval's production. The wines are fermented with only natural yeasts and basket-pressed grapes to provide the most sensitive juice extraction to make handcrafted wines of balance, elegance and purity. The fruit comes from ultra-high quality grapes throughout Margaret River.

The Wines

The Mr Barval range includes Chardonnay, Rose and Cabernet Merlot. There’s also  an early harvest style Nebbiolo called ‘Nebbia’ and Rhone-inspired white, ‘Mistral’ made from Viognier and Marsanne. Wines can be purchased online or at various stockists throughout WA.

Description

The Old Kent Yard vineyard is located in the Great Southern Region of Western Australia, with its cellar door in Margaret River. Originally set up in 1952 as a sheep farm, a vineyard area was planted with Pinot Noir in 1985. These days Chardonnay, Shiraz and Sauvignon Blanc are grown too. Hands-on and down to earth owners, the Noacks, conducted a major rehabilitation scheme across the whole property, including a tree-planting programme, whereby various species of Eucalypt and deep-rooted perennials were planted. 

‘The Farm,’ as known to the family also produces lamb and elusive native marron that are sold at the Cellar Door.

The Wines
Old Kent Road is a serious, cool-climate, single vineyard producer that focuses varietal, regionally expressive wines. The vineyard started out growing fruit for established wine producers. Seeing the great success of their wines, the Noacks decided to produce their own label, releasing a sparkling wine and pinot noir in 1991. These wines achieved a raft of awards and remain the flagships of the Old Kent River range.

Wine Tasting
Since 2017 the winery has operated a rammed-earth cellar door, conveniently located on the corner of Caves and Ellen Brook Road just north of Margaret River town. The whole range of wines from Margaret River and the Great Southern can be tasted. Groups tastings can be booked in advance for groups of 8 or more. Open daily 10am – 5pm. Description

An integral part of the Peel Region for over 40 years, the first vines at Peel Estate were planted in 1973. Owned and operated by Will Nairn, the winery features 12 acres of vines, and its unique coastal limestone soils and high-water table provide ideal viticulture conditions. Wines at Peel Estate are made onsite in the original architect-designed colonial style brick and timber winery, that visitors can observe from the rustic mezzanine tasting area. The winery Is surrounded by magnificent Tuart trees.

The Wines

Established in 1973 by Will Nairn, Shiraz was the first variety planted followed by Chenin Blanc and Zinfandel in 1976 and Cabernet Sauvignon in 1979. Today, the extensive range also includes Verdelho, Chardonnay, Rose, Sparkling and Fortifieds.

Cellar Door

Open daily from 10am-5pm, enjoy a wine tasting in the charming, rustic cellar door that overlooks the winemaking floor. Bring along a picnic and enjoy your favourite Peel Estate wine in the beautiful picnic grounds under the Tuart trees. During harvest in late-summer, lucky visitors may get to see grapes being crushed and pressed along with red wines fermenting.

From October to April, Peel Estate presents their popular Summer Music Series featuring a variety of family-friendly music days.

Redgate Wines

Enjoy homely tastings, panoramic surrounds and possibly the region’s only fortified Shiraz at the multi-award-winning pioneer winery and cellar door giving a whole new meaning to the name ‘Redgate’.

Description

The story behind the name of this Margaret River pioneer dates back 100 years. It’s alleged that prior to the vines, the site was a dairy farm, whose ‘prominent red gate’ was known locally as the place to buy (illegal) home-distilled spirits. Incidentally, the property is nearby to Redgate Beach, so founder Bill Ullinger thought the name to be fitting on all fronts!

The vineyard was established in 1977, with 20 acres of vines planted. Over time, the family owned estate has grown into a 55 acre vineyard, operating its own winery, cellar door and maintaining an enviable reputation for its boutique, premium wines.

The Wines
Since the early vintages of the 1980s, Redgate’s handcrafted wines have received countless awards. In addition to its regional Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnays, Redgate makes Rose, Sparkling and a series of three luscious dessert wines, including a rare fortified Shiraz named in honour of founder, Bill.

Wines can be tasted at the homestead-like cellar door is open daily from 10am to 4.30pm. It’s a family-friendly place, perfect to bring a picnic and enjoy the panoramic surroundings.
