Description

Barton Jones Wines is a boutique winery with some of the oldest vines in the Geographe Region, six acres were planted in 1978 with the first wines produced in 2007. Our grape varieties include Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Semillon and Chenin Blanc and we are part of the Geographe Wine Region of Western Australia. We’re situated just 1.5km from Donnybrook town centre.
Mature vines and fruit quality underpin the production of premium wines. The 56-acre property includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Semillion and Chenin Blanc. The vineyard is dry grown and has no requirement for irrigation.

Two distinct wine styles are produced: the Premium Series is a wooded style vintage with food matching in mind, and the Cellar Series, restrained with oak and a fresh, vibrant fruit driven style.

The cellar door is entirely solar powered and has a ‘skate park’ roof shape designed to catch the perfect amount of sun power and collect rain water. All materials used in the cellar door are environmentally friendly and upcycled.

The cellar door and cafe is open for tastings and sales from Thurs- Sun 11am to 4.30pm and most public holidays (excluding Good Friday and Christmas Day). It’s available for hire for weddings, birthdays and other special events, including corporate days and meetings.

Description

Alon and Jodi Arbel purchased the property in 2003, building their winemaking facility in just three short months. Following a chance encounter, when James Halliday tasted their unnamed and unlabelled Shiraz, Bella Ridge Estate was born. (The winery needed a name to be printed for a national review in Halliday’s column in The Weekend Australian!)

The vines, planted in the 1960s, are almost entirely non-irrigated and crop levels are kept very low. Coupled with the vineyard's aspect on the foot hills of the Darling Range and the excellent gravelly loam soil, the result is grapes of excellent quality with highly concentrated fruit flavours.

The Wines

Focusing on warm climate varieties that are well suited to the region, the mostly hand-picked range includes Italian, Spanish and classic French styles made with a ‘non-commercial’ approach, where characterful wines are encouraged. Winemaking and bottling are completed within the estate. All wines can be purchased online.

Description

In 1975, local couple Merilyn and Graham Hutton (a teacher and dairy farmer) decided to diversify their cattle farm, planting a 4.5 hectare vineyard on their property. Ingenuity was paramount in those early days as they became self-tutored vignerons and winemakers, building their winery ‘on the cheap’ by hand, from local resources. In 1978, they named their venture Gralyn, a combination of both their Christian names.

New generations of the family are at the helm of winemaking and viticulture these days, growing highly sought-after wines from their non-irrigated, mature vineyard, located 3km from the coast.

The Wines
Organically made, the wine range focuses on full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay with strength and finesse. Gralyn Estate also made the region’s first range of fortifieds, which it has continued since 1978. The current selection includes flavours such as coffee, ruby chocolate and white chocolate. Traditionalists will love the Rare Tawny, Muscats and Vintage Ports which have been judged as some of Australia’s finest.

Description

Harvey River Estate is a family owned winery located in the acclaimed Geographe wine region of south-west Western Australia.

The family have a long and significant history in the south-west's agricultural industry with the original farm dating back to the early 1900s when the current owner's father emigrated from Italy and planted citrus a large citrus orchard. Over the following years the farm grew and the business diversified to also include sheep and cattle. Of course, like many of Italian migrants, the family made their own wines.

From humble beginnings, the second generation evolved the winery business from vineyards into wine production under the Harvey River Estate label in 1999. The first commercial vintage was produced in 2000 and the business went on to be awarded the Jimmy Watson award for its 2009 Joseph River Cabernet.

In 2015 a new cellar door, warehouse and administration building was built on the banks of the Harvey River, being only 50m from the original cellar door which allowed access to the now famous ‘Big Orange’ on Third Street to be retained.

The Harvey River Estate vineyards are just 800m away on Fifth Street, with almost 50 acres under vine planted to Chardonnay, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Harvey River Estate cellar door is open daily from 10am - 4pm.

The Olive Farm property dates back to 1829 and was established by an English botanist named Thomas Waters who brought grapevine cuttings and olive trees with him when he settled in Perth. He planted the olive trees first, hence the name, but wine was soon produced, with the first vintage in 1834. (Much of which became currency for bartering with the local shopkeepers!)

In 1933, Ivan Yurisich purchased the property. He had immigrated from Yugoslavia at the turn of the century and after working in the Goldfields and outback of WA, decided to try his hand at winemaking. The property has remained in the family for four generations.

The Wines
Historically, The Olive Farm made fortified wines which were sold by the cask to the Goldfields in Western Australia. The winery become one of the first in WA to produce Traditional Method Sparkling wines back in the 1960s. These remain a core of range which is now named ‘Olivine’.

Still table wines were introduced in the 1970s and achieved great success in the local wine shows. The current range is diverse, with over 35 sweet to dry white, red, sparkling and fortified wines. There are all the Swan Valley classics, along with some other surprise varieties like Tempranillo, Traminer, Durif and Cabernet Franc.

Wine Tasting
The Yurisich family built their ‘dream’ winery and cellar door in 2007. It is set on a 24-acre property in the heart of the Swan Valley and has received significant awards for its architecture and interior design. Visitors are welcome to sample from the full range of wines, with tastings available 10am – 5pm daily. A walking tour of the vineyard and winery can be booked in advance, it begins at 10.30am.

Unique Highlights: The Cheese
Taste and graze from a selection of over 75+ different international and local benchmark cheeses at the family’s Cheese Barrel Café. Just metres from the cellar door, this architecturally-designed gem of a property is a place of wine and cheese-lovers’ dreams. The all-day menu is both flexible and generous, with cheeseboards starting from $35-$40. Free cheese tastings are available too. They are best experienced between 10am and 1pm before it gets too busy. Families, children and even dogs are welcome.

The Cheese Barrel Café is open 10am – 5pm Monday and Tuesday, and 10am-5pm Wednesday to Sunday.

Description

Established in 2000, Western Range Wines is an award-winning winery situated within the picturesque Chittering Valley. Just under an hour northeast of Perth, the Chittering Valley is far-removed from the hustle and bustle of the city. The region’s topography is responsible for a number of microclimates suitable for different grape varieties. The climate is typically Mediterranean with cool, wet winters, ideal for retaining acid structure and flavour.

The hillside location and modern vinification equipment allows for efficient and gentle handling, respecting the varietal characteristics of the grapes. Minimal winemaking handling techniques are employed to enhance freshness and character of the aromatic white varieties. In contrast, traditional winemaking techniques are employed on red varieties, with open fermenters and barrel aging to produce elegant, modern expressions of each variety. Western Range Wines are currently exported into Canada, China, France, Poland, Russia and Japan.

The current Cellar Door facility is an original weatherboard building, which has been converted into a cosy tasting room and sales area. Light meals, snacks and hampers are available whilst enjoying well informed wine tastings.

With beginnings of small batch, hand-crafted wines and a familiar icon etched in the Margaret River Wine Region landscape, Driftwood is a 5 Star rated winery with highly accoladed wines and more to come for all to enjoy in the future.

Driftwood Estate is a boutique winery set in the stunning Wilyabrup sub-region of Margaret River, Western Australia. Established by Tom and Helen Galopoulos in 1989 on what had previously been a country retreat, the winery immediately received acclaim when its first wine, a Semillon produced in 1993, won a special commendation in a British competition.

In 2009, leading Australian wine writer James Halliday rated Driftwood Estate as one of the best wineries in the Margaret River region. This result has continued into the 2018 Wine Companion, where Driftwood Estate has again been rated a 5 Star Winery. The vine resources are exceptional, having had years of nurturing to ensure they produce premium fruit showcasing the Wilyabrup sub-region beautifully.

The winemaking philosophy behind the Driftwood wines is one of simplicity – quality wines are made in the vineyard. While winemaking can have a positive input, having premium quality fruit is essential. This is why Driftwood Estate is so fortunate to be located in one of the greatest viticultural areas in the world, sourcing super premium fruit year in year out. With premium quality fruit, our wine making philosophy is all about protecting and expressing the qualities found in the grapes, so that the wine lover can enjoy the pure, varietal and regional flavours from the Wilyabrup sub-region of Margaret River.

The wines are produced under four labels, Single Site, Artifacts, The Collection, and Oceania.

Our Single Site range of Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon showcases the best of Driftwood Estate. Over the years, our vineyards have grown in maturity and pedigree, and we have produced Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon from the 2016 vintage to reflect this, with releases occurring soon.

Artifacts are the more complex styles, demonstrating the intense characters old vine fruit can develop, and once in the winery, utilising oak influence and subtle winemaking techniques resulting in wines of strength, elegance, and integrity that will drink beautifully young whilst also reward careful cellaring.

The Collection range showcases fruit driven, regionally renowned wines that are designed to be enjoyed in their youth – vibrant blends and crisp, clean wines for everyday drinking.

The Oceania range is predominately a cellar door and online range, offering a Rosé, a White Blend, a Sparkling and a Tawny.

The beautiful branding takes Driftwood back to its beginnings, with small batch, hand-crafted wines showing how age and experience in the wine world can lead to memorable Collections and stunning Artifacts for people to enjoy now and into the future.

Description

The winery was started by brothers Murray and Iain Montgomery - both have always had a passion for good wine, which led them with their wives to develop the Kalgan property and the rammed-earth cellar door facility.

In a new chapter, new owners Phil and Michelle have big plans for Montgomerys! They are in the process of redeveloping the cellar door to be a tavern - which will have one of the best outlooks in the Great Southern! Along with food sourced locally it will also feature local wines and beers and offer something for every palate.

RAYMOND WILLIAMS;  VITICULTURIST

Ray commenced his career at Goundreys in Mount Barker where he became responsible for the entire estate vineyards. Subsequently, with significant knowledge of the climate and soils of the Great Southern, he established his own viticultural consultancy and now manages a number of independent vineyards including Montgomery’s Hill which he helped plan and establish.

QUALITY CONTROL

Ray Williams runs a very strict operation as far as the total wellbeing of the vineyard is concerned. The Cellar door and storage area was built away from the vineyard on Ray Williams’ advice to keep the public away from the vines for prevention of disease reasons. Montgomery’s Hill vineyard is quite idyllically situated with the closest vineyard being 10km from it. Consultants are employed during the winemaking process to ensure a quality product is produced from the excellent fruit grown at Montgomery’s Hill.

ALBANY GREAT SOUTHERN, WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Early explorer, T.B Wilson MD Surgeon RN came up the Kalgan River in a longboat during an 1834-35 expedition exploring the hinterland around the settlement of Albany . He wrote in his journal about the area which now comprises Montgomery’s Hill vineyard “this would be the place to grow the vine”.

The vines were planted in 1996 and have produced some excellent wines that have won numerous medals, including the 2007 Wine Wise Chardonnay trophy for the best wine under 300 tonne production in Australia.

The cellar sales outlet is open daily from 11am to 5pm (Winter months June to August 12noon to 4pm). Cheese platters are available and can be enjoyed with a glass whilst sitting on the verandah enjoying the view.

Stringybark Winery and Restaurant was established in 1985 and named after Stringybark Creek in North Eastern Victoria. In much earlier times, Stringybark Creek and Australian bushranger Ned Kelly became folklore following a shootout with Sgt. Kennedy and Constables Scanlon and Lonigan.

Only a 50 minute drive from Perth, this casual, family-friendly restaurant has a roaring log-fire and a range of traditional favourites on the menu, including pizzas, pastas and rustic home-style meals.

The Wines
Stringybark vineyard is one of the oldest in the Chittering Valley and produces a limited quantity of hand-picked Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Verdelho grapes. This limited production combined with the special regional characteristics of the Chittering Valley helps to produce wines with intensity and distinctive varietal character.
