Description

Born in 1956 in Perth, Western Australia, to Hungarian parents, Kati studied art at Edith Cowan University and the Hobart School of Art, majoring in printmaking. Since 1980 she has lived mainly on the far south coast of WA, working from her home studio. The telling of tales has always been integral to her art practice, and she draws on personal stories and incidents along with grander narratives to devise a form of visual fable. Using a cast of characters including animals and objects, her storylines describe the mystery, frailty, hopefulness and anxiety of life. She says, 'I often think of my images as small theatre settings where various dramas are enacted'. Kati's art is often imbued with her Eastern European heritage, and a journey to trace her migrant family's homelands in 2010 is reflected in subsequent exhibitions, and in the development of a series of works.

More recently, Kati has been exploring the natural world, looking at ways to depict the fragility and complexity of natural ecosystems.

Kati's work has been exhibited nationally in both solo and group exhibitions, and is held in numerous private and public art collections in both Australia and overseas.

Description

Through the lens of my camera, I capture the beauty of the South West region’s natural heritage & lifestyle in all its diverse forms. My partner Al Purdon, perfectly complements my images by framing them in WA’s celebrated timbers – Jarrah, Marri, Sheoak & Karri. Our aim is to recycle, using the assorted ‘waste’ of the timber industry – bark edge face cuts, discards and mill ends; in fact anything we can find to add that final appealing touch to make art.

Description

Beach-combing on a remote Far Northern section of The Great Barrier Reef, gave me opportunity to take a special photo that has now made its way into my artwork.

It was the catalyst to commence a marine inspired theme called “overboard”. A small cottage in Margaret River has been in the process of renovation during the past 12 months and an art studio has emerged. I now have a home for my artworks and space to paint in a pretty little piece of Margaret River.

Description

Painting is as much a part of my life as eating or resting. Even though I have intention when I begin a new piece, I allow the painting to have a say. There is a great deal of problem solving that goes on but challenge brings growth, satisfaction and endless inspiration and hopefully a positive emotional response from the viewer.

I run group workshops in pastel, acrylic and oils at my studio gallery, as well as for art societies throughout Australia.

Artist Statement
The nature of paint as a substance and painting as an act is most alluring to me. As an abstract expressionist and process-driven painter I mix pigmented substances, exploring them as elemental and reactive. Facilitating the process with experience and intuition, my work is a recording of natural forces and processes, such as density and flow in response to gravity, elemental exposure and chemical reaction. I encourage paint to behave and express due to circumstances.

Because these principles are universal the result is somehow recognizable; such as cloud formations, aerial landscapes, cosmic macrocosms and cellular microcosms. When painting I am revealing a process that tells a story – a visual dialogue.

These painterly happenings at play on the canvas, invoke a desire to reach and touch, respond and engage; and to celebrate the intimacies it brings. The experience results therefore in something sensory. I invite you to trust your response as authentic and valid. I believe the work is given unique expression under your regard and that is exciting!

Description

For, after securing my loving father and my adventurous mother, my gift: to enjoy to make pictures and to frolic around with colour and shapes. Doing so, brings me much satisfaction and joy.

I graduated from Sydney’s City Art Institute, with a BA in 1984. Since then I've been working as an artist, illustrator and teacher, mostly using water colour and ink on paper and acrylic on canvas.

I like to start with a theme or an idea and then see where it takes me. It is always a surprise to see what happens when I get out of my own way.

Chloe Wilder

Chloe Wilder is yet another Margaret River blow in from a small and extraordinarily exotic country off the East coast of Australia.

  • Galleries:Drawing,Painting,Mixed Media,Print Making,Artist Studio

Details

  • Open Days:By Appointment Only

Description

Her current body of work is focusing on the modern female portrait. In her large scale oil paintings, Chloe attempts to connect with women who display an air of strength and hunts down faces on social media.

It seems a tad odd of her to paint people she doesn’t know and to expect you to be impressed by her renditions of those who mean squat to you, but that is the whole point. What inspires a painter? Can you communicate a feeling? Is it the same feeling for everyone? What is the connection between the artist and the muse? How is that connection forged between people sometimes on opposite sides of the world? What even is a portrait in the era of selfie culture?
