Description

Through the lens of my camera, I capture the beauty of the South West region’s natural heritage & lifestyle in all its diverse forms. My partner Al Purdon, perfectly complements my images by framing them in WA’s celebrated timbers – Jarrah, Marri, Sheoak & Karri. Our aim is to recycle, using the assorted ‘waste’ of the timber industry – bark edge face cuts, discards and mill ends; in fact anything we can find to add that final appealing touch to make art.

Description

He’s incapable of stinting on the time required to hand-make beautiful, elegant objects which buyers cherish for a life time and bequeath to the next generation as heirlooms or collector’s items.

For a number of years he has been creating exquisite timber and metal furniture pieces and sculptures in a Workshop on the farm where he’s lived for 10 years with his family.

In his woodcraft and black smith shop he works creating and designing pieces that are unique and mostly a one-of design not just another craft shop but as a place and space that visitors can feel and smell the elements of steel, wood, fire & water, his workshop is  located in apple packing shed built in the early 1900s ,and his creations now being displayed in a purpose built gallery with materials sourced from the refurbishment of the Mount Barker apple cool-stores built in 1918 ,now known as Corkescrew Gallery and Workshop.

George says the 100 year old shed “is a perfect complement to the works I exhibit made from W. A. timbers – new and recycled".

George's passion for wood starting out  as a carpenter and joiner at the age of 16 and the metal working skills came from his father in law, now 91, a career blacksmith all of his working life.

There are plenty of stories such as these to hear and wonders to observe when you visit the Corkescrew Gallery. You’re welcome to spend time enjoying the artworks at your leisure, or alternatively, watch  as George transforms wood and metal into collectible and also functional pieces of furniture and art.

Some new materials have come to me this year, but I’m still mining recycled materials from 20 years of collection, starting with the building of our studio home. The largest sculpture.

I love the freedom of working with a wide variety of recycled materials. Each work of mine, and many of the materials, has a back story. It has been part of something before.

Description

On December 13 2005, Tjukurba Art Gallery was officially opened by the Shire of Wiluna as a venue for creative expression, and to celebrate the visual culture of the local Martu people. On December 13 2005, Tjukurba Art Gallery was officially opened by the Shire of Wiluna as a venue for creative expression, and to celebrate the visual culture of the local Martu people. The gallery has been under intense renovations for the last 12 months, and we are pleased to announce its reopening in the second half of 2017. The gallery now combines professional and contemporary exhibition spaces with the beautiful historical features of the original, heritage-listed building. Situated at the back of the Shire of Wiluna premises on Scotia Street, the gallery has now grown into an important part of the community and displays a wonderful selection of paintings, prints and jewellery, all locally produced by the Birriliburu, the clan of Martu people specific to this region.

Description: Tjukurba Art GalleryThe gallery is not for profit and provides artists with professional quality materials, a comfortable art room, promotion of their artworks and access to workshops and activities to develop further their artistic skills. The gallery takes a very modest commission which does not meet our operational costs, but we are committed to providing the Birriliburu with a gallery that pays them fairly, respects their copyright and treats their work and culture with respect.

Artists draw inspiration from the stunning landscape in this region which includes the Canning Stock Route, Gunbarrel Highway, numerous Rock holes such as North Pool and Bowanoo to name just a few.

Tjukurba is a foundation member of AACHWA, and an associate member of Desart. We are also members of Arts Law, adhering to all official codes of conduct and fully supporting the ethical trade of Indigenous Art.

Tjukurba is a part of the Shire of Wiluna who house, maintain and financially support the gallery. In addition, we receive significant support from the Australian Government through Indigenous Visual Art Industry Support funding. Without the Shire of Wiluna and the federal government, Tjukurba would simply not exist and could not continue to operate.

The gallery is open on weekdays from 8:30am to 4pm, except on public holidays and between the Christmas and New Year period. Appointments can be made to view artwork on the weekend by contacting our Art Gallery Manager Sara Walker on 0468 680 181.

Tjukurba Art Gallery and the Shire of Wiluna acknowledge and pay respect to the traditional custodians of the land where we reside, the Birriliburu.
