Description

KAS Helicopters story began in Derby in 2007, when respected businessmen and passionate commercial helicopter pilots Dave Preedy and Adrian Crook partnered together to offer a specialist helicopter service to the Kimberley region of WA.

Their ambition to offer a specialist service which surpassed all expectations for quality, safety and added value saw KAS Helicopters quickly become the Kimberley helicopter company of choice by the resources and tourism industry.

Dave Preedy has proudly been a Derby local for over 25 years, meaning there’s not much he doesn’t know about the Kimberley. He has a strong track record in local business ownership in Derby and presently owns Kimberley Car Hire.

Adrian Crook is the founder of a successful transport and logistics company which has serviced Derby from Perth for nearly two decades. This company continues to go from strength to strength, and was sold to an ASX-listed company in Jan 2010. An astute businessman with an acute knowledge of Derby, Adrian is a graduate of the Curtin Business School and is a chartered member of the Institute of Logistics & Transport.

Certainly, both Dave and Adrian are no strangers to business in the Kimberley, and are highly aware of the unique demands and services that customers require in this remote region of Australia’s outback.  In particular, both partners also possess many years of experience providing high end value professional services to multiple industries, especially oil & gas, mining & exploration.

Importantly, Dave and Adrian are both well known and respected throughout the Kimberley region and relish the opportunity to extend their vast knowledge, relationships and contacts through KAS Helicopters.

Mimbi Caves Tour

The tour begins with a fascinating walk between towering Karst cliffs to the caves entrance. Along the way your guide will share traditional knowledge of local bush tucker, bush medicine and the native flora and fauna found around the cave system.

After a quick check of torches you enter the caves. The walls of the cave are abundant with marine fossils, layers of sedimentary limestone and richly coloured ochres that stain the walls. Natural light enters the cave system through holes in the cave roof making it possible to navigate through the cave and casting light on ancient rock paintings, each of which has its own unique connection to the caves and local people.

During the tour enjoy traditional Billie Tea and damper, made the traditional way using native seeds, around the campfire while Ronnie shares a song or two on the guitar and tells the Gooniyandi Dreaming story of the Blue Tongue Lizard and the Mud Lark.

Experience the acoustics of the natural amphitheatre and see the deserted German squatters camp, complete with intricate carvings and stone shelter.

After the tour, you will have the opportunity cool off in one of the many permanent, freshwater pools near the caves campsite.

Description

One Tide Charters commenced operations in April 1997, initially doing one day fishing & crabbing tours from Derby. In September 1998, owner / operator Greg Prouse purchased their original charter vessel “White Lightning’ to offer extended cruises to the Buccaneer Archipelago. In addition to eleven years experience as a charter boat operator, Greg has had in excess of 30 years boating experience, previously owning his own private boat called ‘Yellow Boat”.

The naming of the Charter business ‘Onetide Charters’ came about when Greg was doing his ‘Charter Boat Operator’s Apprenticeship’ with his good friend Joe on ‘Yellow Boat’ when in 1987 they spent 3 months cruising the Kimberley coastline. Not fully appreciating the significance of the extreme tidal variations they ended up a river system and had to wait ‘for one tide’ to be able to get out of there. It was during this trip that Greg & Joe where the first people to visit Mike & Susan Cusack during their Australian Geographic sponsored ‘Year in the Wilderness’.

Our original vessel ‘White Lightning’ has served the business admirably and with distinction over the past 10 years. However the time came to make the hard decision to retire a much loved vessel, and in February 2008 One Tide Charters took delivery of their new charter vessel Kimberley Explorer. Undoubtedly, 'White Lightning's famous toilet will be sadly missed by those who did a trip on 'White Lightning'.

Over a 25 year period, Greg made several extended trips to the Kimberley of 3 – 12 months duration, where a significant amount of his time was spent exploring the Kimberley coast line. During this 25 year period, Greg spent 3 months working with Malcolm Douglas to produce a documentary titled ‘One Wet Season’. He also spent 12 months living with an Aboriginal Community in the northeast Kimberley, learning about Aboriginal culture and bush survival.

Prior to commencing the Charter business in Derby, Greg owned and operated his own roof plumbing business in Perth for 20 years. This business was sold in 1997, prior to coming to Derby to commence preparatory work to establish the charter business in April 1997.

Wayne, Alex and Sue make up the highly regarded and very capable crew. With a reputation for being very considerate of passengers’ every need and their attention to detail, they are highly commended in the visitors book.

AnnaGreg is assisted in the charter business by his partner Anna. Whilst Anna’s professional qualifications are not entirely relevant to the charter business, her domestic skills seem to be appreciated by the passengers and crew. In addition to doing some of the catering, keeping the books up to date, doing GST returns and maintaining tourism accreditation, Anna co-ordinates the advertising, responds to customer enquiries, helps with client’s travel logistics and makes sure the swags are clean and fresh for each trip. When time and opportunity permits Anna is always a willing deckhand / cook.

Description

Jandamarra’s hideout

Western Australia's oldest cave system, in Tunnel Creek National Park, is famous as a hideout used late last century by the Aboriginal leader Jandamarra. He was killed outside its entrance in 1897.

Tunnel through the reef

You can walk through the tunnel to the other side of the Napier Range. The trek runs underground for 750 metres and you have to wade through several permanent pools and return the same way. At least five species of bats live in the cave, including ghost bats and fruit bats, and stalactites descend from the roof in many places.  The roof has collapsed through to the top of the range near the centre of the tunnel. Take a torch, wear sneakers and be prepared to get wet and possibly cold.

Take a day trip to the tunnel

Day trips to Tunnel Creek operate from Derby, Fitzroy Crossing and Broome and usually include a visit to Windjana Gorge. Fees apply to visit the national park.

You need a four-wheel-drive to access the park, which is generally inaccessible during the wet season.
Tunnel Creek is a day use area, with facilities limited to toilets, picnic tables and an information shelter. You are welcome to camp at nearby Windjana Gorge National Park (camping fees apply).
