Diving at Turtle Bay

This is a flat topped limestone reef that projects out about 500m in to the waters of the bay.

  • Activity:Diving
  • Type:Sites & Trails

Details

Description

The sides range from 1 metre high to 3 metres further out. A wide range of life lives along the walls and in the many nooks and crannies with in the limestone itself. The base of the ledges grade into rubble and then into the fine white sand which makes up the beach. As it is close to shore a surge develops towards low tide that can make the closer in section unpleasant.

Along these walls there is a number species of hard and soft corals offering some great photo opportunities. A wide range of fish are also seen. A survey done in south passage at the southern end of the island reported 323 species of fish. This end does not appear to be much less. The beach is a nesting beach for loggerhead turtles and they are often seen in the waters of the bay. Dolphins, sharks, whales, manta rays and whale sharks are also seen in this area.

The large fish feeding event in early 2001 which featured hundreds of sharks, Brydes and humpback whales and large pelagic fish was between this reef and cape Inscription.

DIRECTIONS: Northern point of Dirk Hartog Island, just to the east of the Cape Inscription Lighthouse. The main bit of reef runs out from the beach just east of the old jetty pylons. This is about 20 Nautical miles from Denham and is exposed in northerly weather. This is rare but caution is required. The crossing from Denham is good in most conditions. In rough seas head across to homestead bay and follow the coast up. unless you are experienced in offshore boating use one of the many charter boats working out of Denham.

Indian Chief is an owner operated charter business and as such our friendly team strive to ensure your fishing experience is nothing short of fantastic.   Brett, our Skipper has had over 40 years experience fishing the beautiful Coral Coast region and prides himself on getting our guests ‘on the fish’.   Both experienced and novice fisher’s will have the opportunity to expand their knowledge or hone their existing skills.

Our vessel visits the pristine waters that surround Bernier and Dorre Islands in the World Heritage area of Shark Bay.   The Islands are renowned for their abundant marine life and are teeming with some of the best ‘table fish’ the world has to offer.   Our weekly guests arrive to start their charter experience on Sunday afternoon and enjoy six nights and five days fishing departing Saturday Morning.   We offer a unique, relaxing ‘no effort required’ kind of charter as your accommodation and all meals are included, your catch is filleted, cryovaced and frozen daily and presented to you on departure in a sealed foam esky, all you have to do is catch them. On return from a great days fishing, enjoy a cold drink and nibbles around the filleting table where the fishing tales inevitably get taller.

Wake up to the smell of fresh coffee and the sparkling waters of the canal lapping at your doorstep, throw out an early morning line whilst your freshly cooked breakfast is being prepared.   Take a short stroll to your charter vessel and enjoy your day on the water.   Dinner is served alfresco by our friendly staff and is a showcase of the award winning produce the Gascoyne region has on offer.

Our client base is primarily return customers and Indian Chief offers a ‘Blue Ribbon’ charter at a budget price.

Description

Where desert meets the ocean…

Long before Europeans landed and settled in the Shark Bay area, the land and waters of Monkey Mia and surrounds provided a strong livelihood for the Nhanda and Malgana people.

Hundreds of years later Wula Guda Nyinda Aboriginal Cultural Tours provide the ultimate enriching experience of the Indigenous culture, history and tradition to visitors of Monkey Mia in Shark Bay, Western Australia.

Owned and operated by Darren “Capes” Capewell, a descendant of the Nhanda and Malgana people, the tours are the only Indigenous experience in Gutharraguda (Shark Bay), and aim to foster an understanding of the natural land, wildlife, stories and traditions of the region.

“Learn the secrets of my people and how we relate to the land, ocean and spirit of country,” said Capes.

"When you visit Monkey Mia it is easy to ‘see’ country, but to truly take something away with you – you need to feel the spirit of country. This is what I share with visitors. People walk away with a deeper appreciation of what country means to my people,” said Capes.

You will be captivated by the deep Aboriginal connections to Gutharraguda as you discover the secrets that have seen the land flourish for thousands of years. Encounter the landscape’s natural beauty and appreciate the Wula Guda Nyinda teachings of the profound relationship between the nature and humankind.

Discover traditional bush tucker, animal tracking techniques and medicinal plants. Immerse yourself in the sacred stories, legends and traditions that have built the strong cultural history of the world heritage listed Shark Bay.

We have developed a range of eco friendly non strenuous tours, each showcasing the very best of Shark Bay’s breathtaking natural environment. From a relaxing tour of Little lagoon on Stand-Up Paddleboards (SUP’s) to Kayaking, 4WD, Camping and even our unique Didgeridoo Dreaming Night Tour. We can even tailor a tour to include a range of experiences for indiviuals, groups or corporate training programs.
